An Unexpected Tragedy

An Unexpected Tragedy

By WildeAbrams

Authors Notes: My story, The Ballad in lm m Kitty and Artie will have a chapter dealing with the death of Finn Hudson. However, to mark the one-year anniversary of the passing of actor Cory Monteith, l am releasing a small portion of the unfinished story as alone-shot. The following is a soothe part of a longer story which I spent some time today polishing up for publication. The final version will have more details, and may have some changes made to it, however I think what I’ve included here will serve as a nice mini tribute to both Finn Hudson and actor Cory Monteith.

This story is dedicated to the memory of Cory Monteith 1982 – 2013.

Additionally my thoughts and condolences go out to actress Becca Tobin (Kitty) at the recent and unexpected passing of her real life boyfriend, Matthew Bendik. #StayStrongBecca

Kitty was in her first period biology class, struggling to pay attention. The teacher was talking about different types of leaves, so Kitty was bored. She started daydreaming, doodling she and Artie’s names in various combinations in her notebook. Before long she had zoned out.

She had no idea how long had passed before her attention was brought back to reality by the teacher calling her name. i OpiAn office cadet had dropped off a pass for her. Kitty rose to her feet, gathered her books, and collected the pass from the teacher on her way out the door.

Kitty was mystified by the pass, itself, however. It directed her to report to the choir room, but was signed by Principal Sylvester. She knew something must be up and hurried down the halls to her destination.

When she arrived, Kitty found most of the members the Glee Club were already present sitting in silence as Mr. Schue, Principal Sylvester, Mrs. Pillsbury, and Coach Beiste sat up front.

This couldn’t be good, she thought.o

“What’s going on,” she asked.

“Thank you for coming, Kitty. Please take a seat, while we wait for the others to arrive,” Mr. Schue answered.

She gave him a confused look and took a seat up front next to Artie and Tina, who seemed just as mystified as she was. Also present were Jake, Marley, Ryder, and Sam. A few moments later, Blaine, Joe, Sugar, and surprisingly Lauren Zeises walked in one or two at a time.

“Now that you’re all here, let’s get started. ” Mr. Schue began.

“Yeah,” Jake started, “Go ahead and tell us what Ms. Sylvester is going to do to us now that she’s principal. Is glee cancelled again?”

Several other people opened their mouths as if to say something, but were silenced by Mr. Schue holding up his hand.

“No,” Mr. Schue said, “Glee is safe for now as long as we win nationals again.” He took a deep breath and continued, “We have to tell you all something, and it’s not easy to say, so I’d appreciate it if you’d all just let me get it out.”

There were nods and sounds of approval from the group, but everyone was clearly more nervous now than a moment before. Kitty reached over and took Artie’s hand. Whatever it was they would face it together.
u
Mr. Schue took another deep breath and began, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but Finn Hudson was found dead in his dorm room early this morning.”

“What?”

“No.”

“That can’t be…”

“But I just talked to him.”

“This is a joke right?”

“I wish it were,” Mr. Schue told them.

“How could that be, we just saw him?”

“Details are still kind of sketchy at this point,” Mr. Schue continued, “but, apparently, he and Puck attended a fraternity party Saturday night. There was a lot of drinking, and they left about 6AM Sunday morning. The dorm desk person saw Finn arrive at the dorms a little after 6:30. He was clearly inebriated, and another student had to help him into his room. When no one had seen or heard from him all day yesterday, people started to get worried, but no one went to check on him. When Puck returned to their room after a date about 3 am this morning he found Finn stretched out on his bed dead.”

No. It couldn’t be! Kitty could not believe that Finn was gone!

They had all just received an email from him a couple weeks ago telling them how excited he was about college, and apologizing for missing regionals; but he promised to be there for Nationals. He couldn’t be dead.

She’d only talked to him a week or so ago, during the first week of the Beatles tribute. He’d made a surprise call to congratulate her when she changed her Facebook status to “In A Relationship with Artie Abrams” and wish them well. It turned out that he, like half the rest of the glee club, had a feeling about the two of them. Then he had told her how proud he was of her.

It just couldn’t be true!

Ever since the school shooting incident a month or so before, Kitty had made a point of letting the important people in her life know how much she meant to them. Finn had been the one who had taken a chance on her and let her into glee club when he had been running it. She’d intended to tell him how much that had meant to her. But, that was something she wanted to tell him in person, not over the phone.

Now she would never get the chance.

A single tear streamed down her cheek, and was quickly wiped away by her free hand.

No! I can not show emotion. I just be strong!

But it was no use. She felt the familiar flush of warmth in her face she got when she was crying.

Kitty’s eyes began to get blurry with tears as she looked around the room. Looks of disbelief appeared on everyone’s faces. Marley, Sugar, and Tina began to cry, each comforted by their respective boyfriends and Blaine.

Artie looked crushed, she knew that the two of them were pretty close. She reached over and put her arm around his shoulder, squeezing him close to her.

Artie Abrams felt like someone had kicked him in the gut. Next to Tina, and now Kitty, Finn was probably his best friend.

He was reminded of what he had told Finn just before he graduated “Finn. Right now you’re something that I never thought possible when I first rolled down these halls. You’re my friend … our friend. Even before glee club was kind of cool you had our backs. You were on the football team. You were one of the most popular kids in school. You had a lot to lose, and people forget the 7~~tn070-sacrifices you made. We wanted to thank you.”

Then, he and the underclass men had then sung the Beatles song In My Life to him. The song, especially the line, “Some are gone, and some remain,” now seemed increasingly fitting. Artie felt his own tears begin to flow.

After high school Finn had lost his direction. He didn’t get into the acting school that he wanted, and washed out of the army after only a few weeks. Artie knew that all he needed was a nudge and a little encouragement, which he was more than happy to provide in return for the friendship and support he’d received over the years.

When he saw how excited Finm was about the prospect of them doing the musical Grease at McKinley, Artie knew what he had to do. He used his powers of persuasion to convince Finn to come and direct the musical with him. At first he seemed unsure, but when Artie recruited two of their other former clubmates to help as well, he began to get very excited about the idea, and poured his heart and soul into it, even as his relationship with Rachel was exploding.

The musical itself was a smash, due in no small part to Finn’s contribution to the production. In addition to the boosting of his confidence, it had the side effect of recruiting two new members for the Glee Club, one of whom was currently sitting next to him holding his hand.

Then Mr. Schue surprised all of them by arranging for Finn to take over the leadership of the glee club while he was in Washington serving on a Blue Ribbon Panel to Improve Arts Education. It was during those few months that he discovered that he had a talent for teaching, and enrolled in college to get his teaching degree pursuing his dream. Even after graduation, Finn was still an inspiration to he and the other glee club members.

But now his friend was dead, and life would never be the same again.

He felt a Kitty’s arm around his shoulder, and leaned in to share her embraced.

Finn’s death was devastating, but they would get through it together.

Artie barely slept that night. He kept going over the information about the experimental treatment in his head, trying to weigh the potential benefits and risks. He didn’t manage to nod off until almost 3 a.m.

Friday morning came fast and he still didn’t know what he was going to do. When he awoke he didn’t have much time to think about it as he had to get ready for morning classes.

He leaned over and kissed the still sleeping Kitty on the cheek before sliding off the bed into his wheelchair. He rolled into the bathroom and began his morning ritual. One of the things that sucked about being in a chair was the fact that everything took him longer to do than most people, like going to the bathroom and bathing.

He’d managed to streamline the processes over the years, but he still had to sit when using the toilet, support himself with furniture and special railings when transferring between the wheelchair and the toilet, when in front of the sink, and when in the shower if he wasn’t on a bench. While this bathroom was better than he’d had in the loft, it still wasn’t what he’d had living with his mom.

Growing up he’d had a custom designed bathroom at his disposal. The sink, cabinets, towel racks, tub/shower had all been designed to accommodate someone in a wheelchair. Here, he had the extra railings and braces installed around for toilet, sink, and shower, along with a bench. He missed the tall sided tub/shower with the seat, and door on the side. The removable bench sitting inside of the regular shower just want the same. Most of the things he need were on the lower shelves and racks, but he still had to reach sometimes, which was a pain. But that was something that just wasn’t common in the world, and he’d been spoiled growing up. Realistically what he had in their current apartment was about as good as he could expect most of the time, and quite often he would just have to make do with facilities designed for people who had full use of their legs, like he had in the loft.

He thought he’d gotten used to the inconvenience, but for some reason it really bothered him that morning; perhaps because for the first time in a very long time, he saw real hope of leaving that all behind him.

He finished his business and headed off to the subway station to catch his ride to his morning class.

# # # # #

Kitty stirred from her sleep when she heard the sound of the rushing water from Artie’s morning shower.

Like Artie, she’d been thinking a lot about the presentation that they’d attended the day before, and what it could do for him. She loved that man so much, and understood more than anyone besides his parents what this treatment could mean for Artie. His morning routine was longer than hers some days, which was very unusual for guys, except for models and others, like their friend Sam, who were overly obsessed with their appearance. It just wasn’t fair that things took him so much longer than most! Not to mention all of the things he likely would never experience confined to his chair.

She understood where Tina was coming from and how she felt, and had been very tempted the night before to tell him to go for the treatment, regardless of the, admittedly minimal, risks and the moral ambiguity of the situation. But she knew that she was right to withhold her opinions, and insist he make his own choice.

She lounged in bed for another twenty minutes after she heard him leave. She crawled out of bed and made her own way to the shower. Ten minutes later she was out in the kitchen in her bathrobe making coffee when Tina entered the room.

She poured cups for both of them and set out a third cup for Nancy when she woke up.

There was obvious tension in the room, but neither of them said anything about it as they sipped their coffee.

“I’m headed back to Providence this afternoon,” Tina finally volunteered after several moments. “Mike and I had plans to spend the weekend together before any of this came up.”

“You’re going to say goodbye to Artie before you go, aren’t you?” Kitty asked, a look of concern on her face.

“Of course,” Tina told her. “My flight doesn’t leave until two thirty.”

“Okay; good,” Kitty answered.

Tina open her mouth to says something, but stopped when a half asleep Nancy shuffled into the room.

Without asking, Kitty poured the older woman a cup and handed it to her.

“Thank you dear,” she said.

“How did you two sleep?” Kitty asked.

“Fine,” Tina answered without elaborating.

“Very well, thank you,” Nancy answered. “How about you?”

“Fine,” Kitty lied. Judging by how tired the other two women were, Kitty suspected that they were lying as well. They had all, no doubt, lost sleep the night before considering the events of the previous day.

“What time does Artie get out of class today?” Tina wondered.

“Eleven o’clock,” Kitty answered. “He should be home around eleven thirty.”

“Good,” Tina said. “We can have lunch before I go.” Seeing Nancy’s confused look, she added, “I was just telling Kitty that I’m flying back to Providence at two thirty. Mike is meeting me there and we’re spending the weekend together.”

“You aren’t sticking around until Artie makes his decision?” The older woman asked, surprised.

“Mike and I had made these plans before any of this came up,” Tina explained, “and Artie knows what I think. My presence won’t change anything. What about you?”

“I’m booked on a flight home Sunday afternoon, but can stay longer if he wants me to for some reason. But I hardly expect it to be needed. I raised my son to be independent and make his own decisions.”

Tina nodded. To Kitty she asked, “Do you mind if I use your shower?”

“No,” the younger woman answered. “Go ahead.”

“Thank you,” she answered, finished her coffee, and she headed to the bathroom.

That morning Artie’s storyboarding class was given free time to work on their midterm projects and get feedback from the instructor. As he sat there he kept losing his focus and he didn’t get very much done during the two hour class period. When he realized this, he sighed in frustration. He was going to have to make up the time later on his own and make an appointment to see his professor during office hours to make sure he was on the right path.

He took the subway home and continued to think about his options. The potential benefits against the risks seemed immense. For some reason, though, he was still dragging his feet.

# # # # #

Tina was waiting with her bags packed when Artie got home.

“Going home so soon?” He asked.

“Yeah,” Tina told him, smiling. “I have weekend plans with Mike.”

“Oh,” he told her, noticeably disappointed.

“But my flight isn’t until later this afternoon, so we can still go out to lunch before I go,” she added.

“Great,” he said with a smile.

The four of them went out to lunch together, before taking a cab to the airport to see Tina off.

Before boarding her flight, Tina knelt down and gave Artie a hug and told him, “I know you’ll make the right choice for you.”

“Thanks, Tina,” he replied. “That means a lot.”

After seeing Tina off, Kitty took the subway to the NYU campus for her 3:00 class, and Artie and Nancy returned to the apartment.

# # # # #

Both Artie and Nancy knew that this was likely to be the last time that they would have alone until her return flight on Sunday, so they decided to take advantage of it.

Nancy sat down and relaxed on the couch, patting the spot next to her, indicating that she wanted him to sit next to her. He smiled, wheeled over, and transferred himself out of the chair. She put her arm around his shoulder and he lay his head on hers. There was just something comforting about being held in your mom’s arms. He hadn’t experienced this in years.

“So, what are you thinking?” She asked him.

“About the prospective treatment, or in general?” He asked.

“Either? Both?” She prompted.

He sighed. “I barely slept last night.”

“Understandable,” she said. “I’m sure that it was a lot for you to absorb. I know it was for me, and I can only imagine what it must be like for you – I barely slept myself, and I’m pretty sure Kitty and Tina didn’t either.”

He nodded. “I just keep going back and forth. It’s a lot to consider.”

“It is.”

“What do you think?” he asked. “So far all I’ve really heard you mention are the risks.”

“It’s a mom’s job to worry,” she told him.

“Mom…”

“Well, it is,” she continued. After a few awkward moments she sighed. “Okay, the truth is that… I agree with Kitty. This is a very difficult decision that you really need to make yourself. I raised you to make your own decisions. Ever since you were a little boy you’ve made your own decisions about how to best handle your needs. Your dad and I just followed your lead. This should be no different.”

“Yeah,” he responded, “I remember. Why was that?”

“The truth is,” she confessed, “I’ve always felt guilty about the accident.”

“Why?” He asked. “The other driver ran a red light, and I was wearing a seatbelt. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“That doesn’t matter, Artie,” she told him. “I may not have technically done anything wrong, per se. But I was driving, and if I had looked both ways one more time, or reacted just a little faster he might not have hit us, or the impact might not have been so strong or in the same place. We’ll never know for sure, and that’s something that I will have to live with thinking about my entire life.”

Artie saw a tear in his mother’s eye, and hugged her close.

“It’s not your fault, mom,” he told her, “I don’t blame you and I had no idea that you blamed yourself. Please don’t!” Artie had always secretly suspected that his mother felt a little guilty about the accident, but he thought that she’d gotten over it years ago.

“I know. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have told you that. It’s something that I made the decision to hide from you a long time ago,” she said. “When you were a kid I saw no need to burden you with that. You had enough to worry about learning to deal with your disability. Fortunately for me, you were pretty assertive at telling us what you needed. We just did everything that we could to make sure you got it. After a while it became easy to hide my guilt from you and everyone else.”

“I don’t understand then, why aren’t you pushing me to do this?” He wondered. “Because if it worked then I would not need any of those special accommodations anymore.”

“I know. I haven’t because I worry that it might make things worse for you,” she told him. “I know the doctors said that was very unlikely, but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t happen.”

“So you don’t think I should go for this….” he prompted.

“I didn’t say that,” she answered. “I’m just not prepared to tell you to do it. Unlike Tina, who seems intent on persuading you at any cost.”

“Tina has always had strong opinions on things,” he told her. “She means well, most of the time, but I learned long ago that I needed to temper her opinions. She actually discouraged me from getting together with Kitty, back in the day.”

“Yeah,” Nancy said. “I sensed some tension there.”

“Tina has never really liked Kitty for whatever reason. I’ve never completely understood why. I thought they had buried the hatchet after Kitty gave Tina her dress after the slushie bucket incident at our senior prom, but it became apparent not that long later that Tina still disliked her when she attempted to convince me that Kitty could not possibly really love me. It’s been tense between them ever since. I know that Kitty has tried to make peace offerings several times since then, but Tina just wasn’t interested.”

“Well,” Nancy informed him, “Tina is completely wrong. Kitty is deeply in love with you! I can tell from the look in her eyes when she looks at you or talks about you.”

“I know mom,” he said. “I feel the same way. Kitty is the love of my life. She’s my soul mate…”

“I’m so glad you’ve found that,” Nancy told him.

“So am I,” he said. “For a long time I didn’t think that I would.”

Nancy had feared the same thing, but had never voiced her fears to anyone except her now ex husband.

“Then marry her,” Nancy prompted.

“I will, mom,” he reassured her, “after our graduations.”

Nancy sighed.

When Kitty returned from class, the three of them had dinner together at a nice little diner a few blocks away.

On Saturday morning they decided to take Nancy sightseeing and they spent the whole day doing that. During the evening they went to see Rachel perform in her latest Broadway show Wicked.

Sunday morning Nancy packed up and the two of them took her to the airport.

After seeing Nancy off, Artie and Kitty returned to their apartment and got ready for an evening out with Marley and Ryder. That evening the four of them discussed the treatment some more, and by the end of the conversation Artie seemed to be leaning more towards actually submitting to it.

# # # # #

Monday morning, Kitty and Artie awoke and started their day as usual. Kitty was sitting at the kitchen table drinking her coffee when Artie wheeled in after completing his routine.

“Morning,” they greeted each other.

He stopped next to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek before collecting his own coffee and sitting across for table from her.

They both shared an awkward silence before Artie broke it by hesitantly saying, “I’ve decided to try the treatment.”

“I’m proud of you,” she told him with a brave smile, placing a hand on the arm he had laid on the table.

Their eyes met and there was another uncomfortable silence.

“I’m scared,” he added, averting her gaze.

“I know,” she reassured him, squeezing his arm. “But I will be here with you every step of the way.”

He slowly met her loving gaze again and they shared a soft smile.

Inside, she was terrified.

The following Friday Kitty shared her week with Marley over lunch at the Spotlight Diner while the guys had class.

“What a week,” Marley began as they took their seats. “Midterm exams kicked my butt!”

“Yeah,” Kitty responded, “We’re not in high school anymore. It kind of sucks!”

They both laughed.

“I miss McKinley on weeks like this! I’m glad it’s Friday! How was your week?” the younger one started as they took the menus they were offered.

“Well,” Kitty said, taking a sip of her water, “On Monday morning Artie called and made an MRI and physical appointment at the hospital that the doctors wanted.”

“So, he’s going through with the treatment, then?” the younger girl asked.

“Yeah,” Kitty answered, “that’s what he told me when we got up on Monday morning, as long as the MRI results match up with what they expected.”

“How do you feel about that?” Marley asked.

“Excited, nervous, and honestly a little terrified.” Kitty told her best friend.

“I can definitely understand that,” her friend told her.

“But I’m choosing to think positively about it.” She said putting a brave smile on her face.

But Marley could see in her eyes how scared she was.

“That’s a good way to look at it.”

“Okay,” Kitty said, changing the subject, “enough about me. What’s new with you and Mr. Lynn??”

Both girls smiled.

“Well,” Marley confessed, cautiously, “I’ve been thinking about it for a while now, and I think I’m going to ask him if he’s interested in moving in together next year. You know, off campus. What do you-”

Kitty squealed with glee!

“I’m guessing you approve?” Marley asked with a smile on her face.

“Our sweet, innocent Marley’s growing up!”

“I’ll take that as a yes?”

“Well, duh,” Kitty answered, regaining her composure. “I’ve been wondering when you’d finally get around to it. I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen on its own or if I was going to have to give you a shove in that direction for your own good. You and Bieber are stuck and have been for at least a year now. You need to get out of it, and moving in together will definitely do that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well,” Kitty told her, “you’ve been dating since high school, and seem to spend all of your free time that’s not spent studying or with Artie and me, with eachother. But you waste money living separately, barely find time for sex because you both have roommates, and haven’t really made any formal or concrete commitment to each other besides agreeing that you’re dating. It would be different if you were long distance or something, but you’re on the same campus five minutes away from eachother. That’s a rut!”

Marley flushed at the mention of sex. “Can you keep your voice down?”

“Seriously, Marley,” Kitty chided in a slightly softer tone, “It’s not the 1950’s! There’s nothing wrong with people knowing that you have sex with your boyfriend. And I happen to know you enjoy it!”

Marley sighed, acknowledging her point. “So do you think he’d be interested?”

“Marley,” she said, “your naivety is getting pretty old. Of course he’s interested. That boy has been in love with you since he first lay his eyes on you! The question is, how are you planning to broach the subject with him?”

“I was actually hoping you could help me with that ….” the younger girl confessed.

“Well, you’ve come to the right person,” Kitty told her friend, getting excited. “The first thing I’d do is talk to your roommate and get her to spend Saturday night with her boyfriend so you get the room to yourself. If that doesn’t work, you can always spring for a motel. Give him hints about how the two of you never go anywhere romantic to get him to take you out to dinner to a fancy sit-down restaurant.

“Do you have any lingerie? Oh never mind, I’ll take you to Victoria’s Secret and help you pick out something suitable to get your Bieber’s hormones in a tizzy-”

“Kitty!”

“What? It’s a special occasion-” Kitty continued.

“I’m not really sure I’m comfortable. …”

“Body issues again?” She sighed, taking a moment to calm down and regain her more serious composure; measuring her words before continuing. This was going to take the sensitive touch.

“I suppose this is partially my fault treating you the way I did after we met. I thought you’d made at least some improvement in that area since high school. Look, in case I haven’t been clear before, I’ve seen you in the locker room, remember? Trust me, you have nothing to worry about!”

“Kitty,” Marley countered. “I know you don’t understand body issues…”

“What makes you say that?”

In response, Marley rapidly raised and lowered her arm several times, gesturing to Kitty’s body.

“Look, Marley,” Kitty got even more serious and lowered her voice. “Everyone has body issues, even me. And I probably shouldn’t say this, but even Arthur. Every couple has to face that sooner or later. If you don’t do it now, I guarantee that you will have to once you live together. It’s unavoidable.”

“Really?”

Kitty signed, “I remember one of the first nights that we spent together after we moved in together…”

~ ~ ~ Flashback ~ ~ ~

Kitty walked into the bedroom. Artie was already in bed. Kitty began to strip out of her clothes, without thinking.

Suddenly she felt uncomfortable. She stopped and turned to face Artie who was laying there watching her disrobe with a grin on his face.

“Do you mind?!” She asked him in an irritated tone.

“Not at all,” he responded with a playful tone and the same grin.

“Then, would you mind not ogling me with those thyroid enhanced eyes of yours!?” she questioned, still irritated.

“Kitty,” he responded in a more serious tone, “It’s not like we haven’t seen each other naked before…”

“I know,” she told him, “but that doesn’t mean you have to stare at me like a voyeur.”

“Very well,” he responded, and decided to respect her wishes, turning on his side and averting his eyes.

She finished disrobing and a few moments later, he felt her crawl into bed with him, snuggling up next to his body, her bare flesh against his. She put her arms around him and kissed his cheek. “Thank you for respecting me and putting up with my insecurities.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“I would be uncomfortable if my boyfriend stared at me like that too…” Marley told her.

“Well you better deal with that soon, because once you live with and share a bedroom and bathroom with a guy, you are going to be seeing each other naked…. a lot.”

Marley was noticeably uncomfortable with that news.

“Look,” Kitty said, switching back to a reassuring tone and placing her hand on her friend’s arm. “All I’m saying is that you need to be ready for it so you can deal with it.”

“How do you do that?”

“By being brave, talking about and facing them, as well as being honest about your fears and insecurities; and understanding about each other’s. That’s what Arthur and I did. Over time ,we developed an intimate understanding of each other and our bodies, and now we are both completely comfortable being naked around each other.”

“Ew, ew, ew!” Marley made a disgusted face “Artie’s like a brother to me, and you’ve just given me a picture that I’m going to have a hard time getting out of my head!”

Kitty laughed. “Sorry about that, I just wanted you to get an idea of what you’re getting yourself into. Trust, me, you’re going to be fine.”

After a few moments of silence, Marley put a smile on her face and said, “So what were you saying about lingerie?”

So there you have it my friends, the next chapter of Wedding Song. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the Season 6 One Shots. They will continue. But it’s been 3 months since I updated this, and this chapter was about 95% done when I got inspired by season 6 and got sidetracked. I just figured it was time to polish this chapter off and get it out there. ~W.A.

On Sunday morning Artie and Kitty waited patiently at the LaGuardia Airport terminal for Artie’s mother Nancy to arrive. Artie hadn’t seen his mother since Christmas, and she was coming to town to visit them for a few days.

Kitty had liked Artie’s mom ever since she first met her four years ago; the first time she’d visited Artie’s home when they were in a Glee Club together. She knew that seeing her would make her boyfriend happy. She was also looking forward to the opportunity to have some girl talk with the older woman, and perhaps get some advice on how to subtly get her son to begin thinking about escalating their relationship timetable.

Artie was really excited to see his mother. As much as he loved film school and New York life, he had to admit that the one remaining significant drawback, since Kitty had graduated and moved out there, was that he rarely got to see his parents. But his mom was on her way to spend a week with he and Kitty, and he couldn’t be more thrilled!

As they waited patiently for Nancy to arrive, Kitty sat in one of the terminal chairs that Artie parked his wheelchair next to and they held hands smiling.

Finally after about twenty minutes they spotted her heading their way, a carry-on bag in her hand and a broad smile on her face. She rushed up to them and threw her arms around her son and give him a big hug.

“I’ve missed you so much!” She told him.

“I missed you too, mom,” Artie told her.

She broke the hug and gave him her cheek, which he planted a peck on.

Nancy then turned her attention to Kitty.

“A pleasure to see as always,” she told the younger woman.

The two women shared a friendly hug and Kitty responded, “The pleasure is all mine, Mrs. Abrams.”

“How many times do have to tell you to call me Na-”

“Nancy,” Kitty interrupted. “Sorry. I keep forgetting.”

“I’ll forgive you for that, until you have to answer to it as well,” Nancy told Kitty, playfully. “After that….”

“Yes, Nancy,” Kitty answered

“Mom….” Artie said sheepishly.

“Oh, Artie,” Nancy told him. “She knows I’m just teasing her.”

“I didn’t mean that. I told you before we aren’t discussing that until after college.”

“Yes dear,” she said, “but a mother can hope.”

“Sorry,” Arrie told his girlfriend. “She’s just getting a little ahead of herself and anxious for grandkids.”

“I am not!” Nancy told her son. “And what did I tell you I would do the next time you insinuated that I was an old hag?!”

They all smiled and laughed. It was an old joke – Nancy often threatened to push his chair over if he insinuated she was an old hag.

In the back of her head, Kitty wished Artie would listen to his mom, but decided to keep her thoughts to herself.

“Why don’t we get your bags and head to our place?” Kitty suggested, changing the subject.

“Oh, I don’t want to put you out,” Nancy told her. “I was planning to stay in a hotel.”

“You aren’t putting anyone out,” the younger woman reassured her. “You can stay in the guest room.”

“You have a guest room?” Nancy asked, surprised.

“Well,” Artie told his mother, “as far as Kitty’s dad is concerned it’s her room.”

“Dad’s still a little in denial about our cohabitation, and we thought it was best to humor him,” Kitty informed her.

“Doesn’t want to think about the prospect of grandkids yet, eh?” Nancy asked, half joking, nudging the younger woman with her elbow.

“Yeah, something like that,” Kitty responded with a sigh.

“We’re allowing him a little more denial time,” Artie added. “Besides he doesn’t have to worry too much. That’s not happening for a few years until after we’re married anyway.”

Inwardly, Kitty sighed, rolling her eyes when she was faced away from the others.

They followed the older woman as she claimed her check-in bag and the three of them headed off to the street and hailed a cab.

# # # #

The cab ride was uneventful and they arrived at Kitty and Artie’s apartment about twenty minutes later. Kitty showed Nancy to the “guest” room and then they left the older woman to get settled in.

Half an hour later, Kitty and Artie were in the living room watching TV when Nancy came out and handed Artie a bundle of envelopes and catalogs. Despite the fact that he hadn’t actually lived there in almost 4 years, Artie continued to get some mail at his mom’s addressed. It was generally unimportant things (anything that mattered had been long since updated to his current address). Normally she just included those when she sent him care packages, but since she was coming to visit she just packed the bundle in her suitcase.

“Nothing that exciting,” she told him as she handed him the bundle. “Except, there is some letter from a hospital here in New York that it seemed odd came to that address. It just came yesterday or I would have called you about it.”

Kitty and Artie both had their curiosity piqued by the news of the letter. Artie had only visited a hospital a couple times since living in New York, and he’d definitely given them his current address. He quickly went through the bundle and found the envelope she was referring to. It was addressed to Artie Abrams (not Arthur J. Abrams, like his official records) and from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Division of Medical Research. He had never been a patient there.

Artie open the letter and skimmed it. “Apparently NewYork-Presbyterian in conjunction with the Columbia University Medical School Department are conducting early human trials on a new treatment for spinal injuries similar to mine. I don’t understand. When Tina and I looked into this about 8 years ago, they were not expecting to start human trials on any of the treatments they were working on for 11-15 years.”

He handed the letter to Kitty who had started reading the letter over his shoulder.

“Well,” his mother told him. “Either this isn’t one of the ones you looked into, or they have escalated their timetable.”

“I guess,” Artie told her. It had been years since he had even thought about the prospect of a treatment for his injury. He had always told himself that he was okay with staying in a chair for the rest of his life, but every once in a while his mind would wander and he would entertain the possibility that he might walk again one day, and maybe even dance. Eight years ago he’d shared this with Tina who had done some research and gotten his hopes up, only to be dashed by a reality check from their guidance counselor Ms. Pillsbury, when it was pointed out how far off clinical trials were. Was it really possible that the research had advanced that rapidly?

Kitty quickly read the letter as Artie and his mom talked, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw the words she was hoping not to: Embryonic Stem Cells. Her heart sank, but she did her best to hide it.

“So are you going to look into it?” Nancy asked her son.

“I don’t know. I’ve pretty much made peace with the idea that I’m going to be in this chair the rest of my life. Just because they are contacting me doesn’t mean that it would would work for me. It’s also possible that it could make things worse,” he told his mother. Then he noticed Kitty hadn’t said anything about it yet. He turned to face her. “What do you think, Kitty?”

But Kitty’s mind was elsewhere and her attention was drawn back to the conversation at hand, “Hmm?… What?”

Artie faced his girlfriend and asked, “What do you think about what the letter says? Do you think that this is something I should look into?”

Kitty smiled, faced her boyfriend and said, “Artie, I think it’s an interesting prospect, and if it worked it might give you a lot of freedoms that you don’t have now. But there are probably risks as well. And it’s equally possible that it might not work or could make things worse. I think it’s something you are going to have to think long and hard on. But whatever you decide, know that I will support you 100%,” she finished placing her arm around her boyfriends shoulders.

It did not escape his notice that Kitty had skirted answering his question, and Artie made a mental note to check in with her later.

That evening in bed, Artie turned to face his girlfriend. “So what do you really think about the prospective treatment?” He asked her.

I don’t know,” she lied. “Like I said before, it’s an interesting possibility -”

“Sweetie,” he told her, “as long as I’ve known you, you haven’t been shy about expressing your options. I can tell you’re holding something back. Please just tell me what you’re thinking.”

She sighed, and turned on on her side to face him, finally relenting.

“Artie, I know we don’t talk about religion much, but you know I was raised Evangelical Christian. I was taught that all life, including that of unborn babies was sacred. That’s a belief that I still have. According to the letter, this treatment uses human embryonic stem cells. Do you know where embryonic stem cells come from? Aborted fetuses.”

“Oh,” he said. Suddenly her reaction made sense. “So you’re telling me that I shouldn’t pursue this?”

“Oh, God, no!” She told him. “I meant what I said before. This is a decision that you need to make yourself. Neither your mom, nor I should tell you what to do. I will support you whatever you decide, and if you do it and it works, no one will be more thrilled than I will. I’m just saying, I have mixed feelings about who you’d have to thank for the treatment.”

He nodded. “Thank you for being honest with me,” he told her, “and for your support. I love you so much.”

“I love you too.” She said, and the two of them shared an affectionate kiss.

Monday morning Artie had classes, so Kitty and Nancy decided to do a little shopping and sightseeing. The two women set out at about 9:00 and took the subway downtown.

The two women spent a little over two hours visiting various shops before they decided that it was time to find something to eat and headed to the Spotlight Diner for lunch.

They got a table and were perusing the menu when Nancy asked, “So how are things between you and my son going? He’s a man, so of course all he says is ‘fine’. Hoping you’ll be a bit more forthcoming.” She smiled.

“Oh ‘fine’,” she answered. Both women chuckled. “Okay, seriously, we are both very happy together,” Kitty continued. “I love him and he loves me. I’ve never felt as close to someone as I do to him. From what I can tell he feels the same way. He’s very affectionate towards me, which isn’t something I have had a lot of past experience with.”

“I’m glad,” Nancy told the younger woman. “I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable yesterday. I really don’t want to rush you into anything you’re not ready for.”

“Not at all,” Kitty assured her. “If anything I wish your son would take the hint!”

Both women laughed.

“So I take it you’ve been thinking about the future then?”

“Yeah,” Kitty said, “for a while now.”

“Have the two of you talked about it?”

“Yeah,” Kitty told her, “but not recently. About a year or so ago we talked about getting married after graduation. But it’s become apparent he was thinking after we both graduated.”

“And you’re thinking sooner than that,” Nancy finished.

“We’ve been together for four years. By the time I graduate it will be SIX years. We don’t need to actually get married right away, but I would like to formalize our relationship and officially get engaged.”

“Have you told him this?”

“No,” Kirty confessed. “And please don’t say anything. It’s very important to me that he propose to me in his own way and in his own time. I’m just getting a little impatient, that’s all.”

“I can understand that,” Nancy said, reassuringly. “James and I only knew each other a few months before he proposed, and we had an 11 month engagement. But that was a different time.”

“Yes,” Kitty said.

“My son loves you,” Nancy said, placing her hand on the younger woman’s arm. “It’ll happen when the time is right.”

“I know,” Kitty responded with a smile.

Just then the waitresses arrived and took their order.

Artie rolled out of his Master Screenwriting class just before 1pm. He was in a hurry to get back to the apartment to spend more time with his mom and Kitty. He checked his phone and saw that he had a missed call and voicemail from his best friend Tina Cohen-Chang.

He hit the key to listen to his voicemail and heard, “Hi, Artie, it’s me. I just wanted to let you know that I’m on the noon flight from Providence to New York. I should land about 1pm. I’ll be in town for a few days, and hope we can get together to catch up in the next day or two. I’ve got something important to talk to you about.”

Tina was Artie’s best friend from high school. They had been in the same grade and graduated together. Now she was a student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He wondered what was so important that she was coming all the way to New York to talk to him about on a week that classes were in session for both of them.

He pressed the key to call her back, but got her voicemail, so he left her a message in return.”Hey, Tina, it’s Artie. I just got your message. I’m getting out of class now and headed back to the apartment. My mom’s in town too. Feel free to stop by this afternoon. Maybe we can do dinner together the four of us. See you soon.”

He headed to the subway to get home.

# # # #

Nancy and Kitty arrived back at the apartment at about quarter to 2 and collapsed onto the couch, shopping bags strewn all around them. It had been a long eventful morning, but they had had fun.

About 10 minutes later, Artie rolled in.

“How was your shopping?” he asked.

“Great,” his mom said. “I managed to find some new shoes and a handbag on sale, as well as a Christmas present for my sister.”

“What about you, sweetie?” he asked Kitty.

“I found a good deal on a couple blouses,” Kitty answered. “How was class?”

“Class was good,” he told her. “But I’ve got bigger news. We’re having company. Tina is coming to town.”

“Really?”

“Yeah,” Artie answered. “It surprised me too. Apparently she’s on her way. I got a voicemail from her when I got out of class. She wants to catch up, and apparently has something important to talk about. I told her that mom was here, but to come over when she got the chance and we’d all have dinner together. I hope that’s okay?”

“It’s fine,” Kitty answered with a smile. Truth be told, Tina wasn’t Kitty’s favorite person in the world. But she was Artie’s best friend and had been since before they had met. They had all been in glee club together in high school. For whatever reason the two of them had never really gotten along. Kitty thought that things would get better between the two of them after she’d extended an olive branch and placed her support behind Tina’s campaign for prom queen even though she’d also been nominated for the position herself, because Tina really wanted it and Kitty was just a sophomore and Tina was a senior. Then, when Tina’s dress had been ruined by a classmates prank, Kitty had given Tina her own dress. Things had seemed to improve between the two of them, and for a month-and-a-half or so Kitty thought they had buried the hatchet. But when Tina, very publicly, told Artie that Kitty didn’t really love him and knocked him out of his chair in the middle of an argument, it became apparent that had been an illusion. Kitty had wanted to do deck the girl, but instead gave her an icy glare and had gone with Artie to see the nurse to make sure he was okay. Caring for her boyfriend had been more important to her than revenge, and at Artie’s request she’d let it drop, but things had been strained between the two of them ever since. For Artie’s sake, she always at least tried to be nice whenever they saw Tina.

“I’d love to see Tina again,” Nancy added with a smile.

Kitty sighed, stood up, and began straightening up the apartment.

About an hour later, there was a knock at the door. Artie answered it, Tina stood there with a smile on her face.

“Artie!” She exclaimed and threw her arms around him.

“Tina, I’ve missed you!” He told her, returning the embrace.

The two of them broke the hug and he invited her into the apartment. Nancy walked over and gave Tina a friendly hug.

“Mrs. Abrams,” Tina greeted her, “good to see you again!”

“You’re all grown up now, Tina, please call me Nancy.”

“Okay, Nancy,” she answered.

“Tina.”

“Kitty.”

The two women greeted each other cordially, exchanging a decidedly more awkward embrace.

“So how was your flight?” Artie asked as they broke the hug.

“It was good,” Tina told him. “It wasn’t that long. I just didn’t want to spend three and a half hours driving and then have to deal with the driving and parking situation here.”

He nodded and lead her into the living room.

“Can I offer you something to drink?” he asked.

“No, thank you,” she answered. “I’m good.”

The group moved into the living room and everyone sat down.

“So how’s school, Tina,?” Artie asked.

“It’s good,” she answered. “Got straight A’s again last semester and am on track to do so again this one.”

“I always knew you were smart,” he told her.

“Says the one who tied with me for high school valedictorian,” she responded, and they both laughed. “It’s my last semester, so I don’t have to take as many credits.”

“Really?” He responded, surprised. “I want to make the most of my time here, so I’m carrying an extra class my last semester.”

Everyone chuckled. They all knew that he was pursuing his dream to be a filmmaker, and would probably stay an extra year if they’d let him to learn as much as humanly possible about the challenging and ever changing field. Tina, on the other hand, was a performing arts major which was more general and prepared her for a variety of jobs in the entertainment field.

“So how are things with Mike,” Kitty chimed in, attempting to be friendly.

“Mike Chang?” Nancy asked. “I thought you broke up after he graduated?”

“We did,” Tina answered. “I had a hard time with the lack of attention I got in a long distance relationship and decided it was too hard so I broke up with him a month later. -”

“-After you’d gotten yourself branded with his name,” Kitty chimed in. Artie couldn’t tell if she were being snarky or teasing.

“Yea,” Tina added, not missing a beat. “I later had the tattoo changed from ‘Mike Chang Forever’ to ‘Make Change Forever’ which I love.

“But, anyway, when we saw each other again a couple months after that when he came back to helpe Artie by serving as choreographer for Grease, we found that the spark was still there and were going to talk about making a go of it again, but then the demands of his schooling and then, later, mine after I graduated, kept getting in the way.

“Finally, after he graduated from Joffey in Chicago last year, we both spent some time together in Lima last summer. Neither of us had had any luck dating others and the spark was still there between us, even after all that time apart, so we had a long talk about our feelings and what we needed in a relationship, and ultimately decided to try long distance again. We were kind of inspired by Artie and Kitty here. We’d only have to do it for about a year. They somehow managed to do two.”

“It wasn’t easy,” Artie chimed in. Kitty reached over and took his hand, squeezing it.

“We’re in the home stretch,” Tina finished, “and things seem to be going great! We’re counting the days until I graduate and we can be together more or less full time. This has really challenged us as people, but I think we’ve both grown a lot, and are a stronger couple because of it.”

They all smiled.

“Well good for you,” Nancy told her. “I’m happy for you!”

“Well, as fun as it is to catch up,” Tina said, changing the subject, “that’s not why I’m here.

“Artie, did you get a letter from the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital last week?”

“Yes,” he answered, confused, “though it was sent to mom’s house, so I didn’t get it until yesterday. How did you know about that?”

“It’s from the doctors developing one of the treatments I looked into freshman year. I got a similar letter. Who do you think gave them your name?”

“I honestly didn’t know,” he said. “I thought all you’d done was some internet research. I didn’t realize you’d actually contacted anyone directly.”

“So have you talked to them yet? What did they say?”

“No, I haven’t -”

“Well when’s your appointment?”

“-and I’m not sure I’m going to,” he finished.

“What do you mean you’re not sure you’re going to? Didn’t you understand the letter? They’ve had some promising results in animal trials and have gained approval to move into human trials like five years before they expected to. If this works you could get some or all of the use of your legs back! You could put that chair away for good and walk or maybe even, in time, dance? Remember, you used to dream of dancing?!”

“I don’t know, Tina. I’ve pretty much made peace with the idea that I’m going to be in this chair the rest of my life. It’s been years since I’ve even thought about the prospect of a treatment for my injury. I’ve always told myself that I’m okay with staying in a chair for the rest of my life, and I’m pretty sure I am.

“Yes, every once in a while my mind might wander and entertain the possibility that I might walk and dance again one day. But then reality checks in. I’m really okay with my life as it is.”

“But, Artie,” she argued, “I know you. I’ve seen the way you looked at all of us in glee, wishing you could dance the way we did-”

“You’re getting ahead of yourself, Tina,” he told her. “You’re acting as if this is a sure thing, and just because they are contacting me doesn’t mean that it would would work for me. It’s also possible that it could make things worse. Add to that, the fact that this treatment uses cells from aborted fetuses, and I’m not so sure it’s worth it. ”

“I don’t believe this, Artie! I thought you’d be thrilled!”

“Tina,” Artie, said, as calmly as he could, “I really appreciate your concern. I know you’re just trying to help, but it’s my decision to make. So I’m going to say thank you, but please let this go, so I can make my own decision. I’ll let you know if I need any more input.”

“Very well,” Tina sighed and pouted.

There was an awkward silence.

“So where are we going for dinner?” Nancy chimed in, breaking the silence. “Anywhere you want. My treat!”

# # # #

That evening the four of them had dinner at Sardi’s.

The dinner conversation was mellow and the topic of the treatment wasn’t brought up again.

About an hour after they got there, Kitty excused herself to go to the bathroom. Five minutes later Tina decided that she also had to go and excused himself as well.

# # # #

Kitty stood at the mirror in the Ladies room at the restaurant re-applying her lipstick when Tina entered.

“I realize that we don’t exactly like eachother, but I need you to help me convince Artie to have the treatment for his own good.”

“Now, why would I try to talk him into supporting the killing of babies, just for the remote chance that he might be able to walk again.” Kitty asked in a snarky tone. How dare Tina assume she knew what was best for Artie, even more than he did?

“What are you talking about?” Tina asked, not understanding the connection.

“I read the letter too. According to what if says, this treatment uses human embryonic stem cells. Do you know where those come from? Aborted babies!”

“So?” Tina asked. She hadn’t realized this, but it didn’t matter where the cells came from as long as the end result was Artie walking again.

“So, by using them in medical treatment, we would be helping rationalize abortion!”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Tina argued. “People are going to get abortions weather the cells are used for something else or not. This is not any different than organ or tissue donation,” Tina said.

Kitty was surprised that Tina, as someone who was adopted, was so caviar about killing unborn babies, but held her tongue. She really didn’t want to fight with her. She knew that the other woman meant well and really thought she was doing this for Artie’s own good.

“Except that the child didn’t consent to it,” Kitty countered instead.

“Children don’t consent to it when a small child dies and the organs are donated to save another young child. How is this any different?” Tina wanted to know.

“It just is!” Kitty told her. “For one thing, in this case the child was deliberately killed!”

“It wasn’t really a child yet! And it was going to be killed anyway? Why shouldn’t some good come out of it?”

“Life begins at conception!”

“No,” Tina countered, “it doesn’t.”

“Are you listening to yourself?” Kitty exclaimed. “You’re just saying that because you want Artie to get the treatment!”

“And you’re just saying it because you don’t!” Tina countered.

“That’s not true!” Kitty said, adding, “I know we’ve had our differences, but I’d never have expected you to defend murder, just because you want Artie to have a small chance to walk again!”

“How dare you! I’m one of his best friends-”

“-And I’m his girlfriend! I’ve known him for 5 years, and lived with him for 2. Don’t you think I know how hard things are for him sometimes? Simple, everyday things that we take for granted are a chore for him, and there are things that he may never experience because it’s not physically possible.”

“Then why aren’t you more supportive?”

“I am supportive! I told him I’d support him whatever he decides, and I meant it. He needs to decide this for himself, and not be swayed by what either of us think. I wasn’t even going to say anything about this to him, but he asked me directly, and I wasn’t going to lie to him.”

“But if he goes through with it and it works he could be normal again,” Tina argued.

“Are you listening to yourself? You’re acting as if there is something wrong with how he is now,” Kitty pointed out, hurt.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Maybe not but that’s what you said,” Kitty said. “Artie’s wheelchair is a part of who he is. It’s shaped the person he’s become. There’s nothing wrong with that! It would be great if he got some or all of his mobility back. But it needs to be his choice weather to go through the procedure or not, and those of us who are close to him need to just be supportive. By pushing him so hard to go through with the procedure you are telling him that there is something wrong with the way he is now. Where would that leave him if it didn’t work? If you’re really his friend, you won’t do that!”

Kitty walked out of the rest room and rejoined Artie and his mom. A few minutes later, Tina did as well.

“Is everything okay,” Artie asked.

“Fine,” Kitty said, quietly.

“Fine,” Tina added.

But it wasn’t fine. The two women glared at each other.

# # # #

That night Nancy offered to share the queen bed in the “guest” room with Tina, but she declined and decided that she was fine crashing on the couch.

# # # #

Later that night in bed, Kitty turned on her side to face Artie.

“You never told me you dreamed of dancing,” she said.

“That’s because I haven’t in a long time,” he told her, “and I have other dreams now.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah,” he told her.

But she wasn’t convinced.

“Artie, I will never tell you what to do here. I’ll support whatever you decide. But I would hate to think that you’re giving up on your dream. If there is even a tiny bit of you holding onto that dream, don’t you think you owe it to yourself to at least talk to them, hear what they have to say, and ask any questions you might have? Don’t let my moral convictions dissuade you.”

“That’s not why I’m reluctant to do this,” he told her. “There is no guarantee it will work, it might make things worse, and even if it does work, the physical therapy would be very intense. I remember what Quinn went through, and it would be a lot harder for me because the muscles haven’t been used in so long.”

She placed her hand in his cheek, and met his gaze.

“I’ve never known you to shy away from a challenge, don’t start now, just because you’re afraid. If you decide to do this, I will be with you every step of the way.”

They both smiled and chuckled at the unintended punn.

“Just think about it, and be sure, okay?”

“I will,” he told her. “I love you so much! Thank you so much for being with me and supporting me.”

“Always.”

They kissed.

Tuesday morning. Artie and Kitty were eating breakfast when Tina approached him.

“Good morning.”

“Morning.”

“Artie,” she said sheepishly, “I owe you an apology. I was just so excited about the prospect of you walking and maybe dancing again, that I didn’t think before I spoke. I should not have pressed you so hard on it and I’m sorry. Kitty and your mom are right, this is your decision to make, and it’s not as black and white as I was acting like it was. I will support you no matter what you decide to do.”

“Thank you, Tina,” he told her. “That means a lot. I know you meant well, and I do understand where you are coming from.”

Just then Nancy walked into the room, half asleep. She had obviously just woken up.

“Both of you help yourself to some coffee if you want,” Kitty told them, gesturing to the coffee maker and cups she had left out on the counter.

“Thank you, dear,” Nancy said as she and Tina walked over to counter.

“There’s bagels, and stuff to make toast if you want as well,” Kitty added.

“Coffee is just fine, thank you,” Nancy said, grabbing herself a cup.

When Nancy and Tina had poured their coffee and joined them at the table, Artie addressed them.

“I’m glad you’re all here,” Artie said, taking Kitty’s hand, “because there’s something I wanted to tell you.” He looked over at Kitty, meeting her gaze. “First of all, I’d like to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and concern.” She squeezed his hand.

He turned to face the others. “After sleeping on it, I’ve decided to make an appointment, and see what these doctors have to say. This doesn’t mean that I am going to go through with this, but I think I owe it to myself to see what this is about before giving up on any of my dreams.”

Everyone smiled.

“And if it’s okay, I’d like all of you to accompany me to the appointment, to hear the presentation with me so you can advise me about the very difficult decision that I am going to have to make. You’re the people who know me the best in the world, and I know you’ve all got my back.”

He was greeted with a chorus of agreements, and everyone was smiling. Kitty squeezed his hand again.

Later that day after he got out of his morning classes, Artie called and made an appointment for Thursday afternoon. Then he called his own doctor and had copies of his records sent to New York-Presbyterian for them to look over.

# # # #

Thursday morning, Artie sat in his classes listening to his professors, but his mind was elsewhere, and he didn’t absorb very much of it. He made a mental note to get notes from a classmate.

His appointment was for 1pm so the four of them left the apartment just after noon. They arrived for the appointment a few minutes early and Artie signed in.

A few minutes later the receptionist ushered them into the office and they were introduced to Doctor Michael Wu and Doctor Susan Roe. After Artie exchanged pleasantries with the two doctors, he introduced the others.

“I’d like you to meet my mother, Nancy Abrams, my girlfriend Kitty Wilde, and my best friend Tina Cohen-Chang.” The doctors each greeted and shook hands with them in turn. “They are the people who know me the best and whom I’m closest. I want them to hear what you have to say with me, and I’d appreciate it if you’d answer their questions, and please feel free to say anything you’d say to me in front of them.”

“Of course,” Doctor Roe answered. She and Doctor Wu noded.

“Tina,” Dr. Wu asked, “you’re the one who contacted us eight years ago?”

“Yeah,” she responded, “I found information about your research online. Artie and I had been talking about the extent of his injuries, and he told me that his doctors had told him that there was no treatment for his condition, and I wanted to know if that was still the case. It had been like eight years since his accident.”

“Well, it’s good that you did.”

“Artie,” Doctor Roe began, turning everyone’s attention back to their prospective patient. “We were very happy to hear from you because from what we were able to tell from the medical records that you sent over, you appear to be an ideal candidate for this type of treatment. In your case, the spinal cord was crushed in your accident, but not completely severed. It’s also down low enough in your spine that if it doesn’t work for some reason it’s unlikely to decrease the abilities you already have.”

“It’s our understanding that you have the use of your hips but nothing below that, and you have no feeling below that either?” Dr. Wu asked.

“Yes,” Artie answered, “if you touch me below a certain point on my legs and I see it, I think I feel it, but if I don’t know it’s coming or don’t see it (for example, under a table) then I don’t.”

“Ghost feelings,” Doctor Wu concluded. “Your mind knows it’s coming and convinces itself that it really feels it.”

He nodded.

“So why don’t you explain the treatment to us?” Artie asked. “So what exactly are embryonic stem cells? I gather they are the key to this treatment.”

“Yes.” Dr. Roe answered, “Put simply, stem cells are the body’s raw building materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. They are cells that have the potential to develop into some or many different cell types in the body. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells called “daughter” cells. The stem cells can live and grow in special solutions in test tubes or petri dishes in laboratories.

“When a stem cell divides, each “daughter” cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell or bone. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types. Serving as a sort of repair system, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells for as long as the person or animal is still alive.”

“What we would be doing here is using implanted stem cells to replaced damaged spinal nerve cells,” Dr. Wu added.

“Where exactly do these embryonic stem cells come from?” Kitty asked. “I’ve heard that they come from aborted fetuses. Is that true?”

“Absolutely not!” Dr. Roe told her. “All the human embryonic stem cell lines currently in use come from four to five day old embryos left over from in vitro fertilization. The National Institutes of Health created guidelines for human stem cell research in 2009 which include strict guidelines for informed consent, and an absolute requirement that embryonic stem cells may only be used from embryos created by in vitro fertilization when the embryo is no longer needed. No stem cells from aborted fetuses are ever used for this.”

“What does that mean?” Nancy asked.

“In in vitro fertilization, researchers mix a man’s sperm and a woman’s eggs together in a lab dish,” Dr. Roe explained.

“We know what in vitro fertilization is,” Tina chimed in. “Our friend Rachel Berry was conceived that way.”

“Rachel Berry the Broadway star?” Dr. Wu asked.

“Yes.”

“I loved her in Funny Girl!”

“Anyway,” Dr. Roe said, bringing them back to the topic at hand. “Some of those eggs become fertilized and begin developing. At about three to five days the egg has divided to become a hollow ball of roughly 100-150 cells called a blastocyst which is smaller than the size of the dot over an “i”. It is these very early stage development embryos that are implanted into the woman in the hopes that she becomes pregnant.

“IVF typically results in many more bioclasts than are actually needed. Each cycle of IVF can produce many blastocysts, some of which are implanted into the woman and the rest are stored in the IVF clinic freezer.

“After a couple has completed their family, they must decide what to do with any remaining embryos. They can continue paying to store the embryos or they can defrost the embryos, which destroys them.

“Some couples may choose to donate the embryos for adoption, though that option is not commonly taken. Or they can choose to donate the frozen embryos for research. These donated embryos are the source of human embryonic stem cell lines.

“Although we wouldn’t be using any of them, some embryonic stem cell lines also come from embryos that a couple has chosen not to implant because they carry genetic mutations. These are discovered through routine genetic testing prior to implantation. Still other embryos might be malformed in some way that causes them to be rejected for implantation into the mother. These embryos with genetic defects of malformations would have been discarded if the couple had not chosen to donate them to stem cell research.”

“So just to be clear,” Artie asked, “there is no chance that these stem cells would come from abortions?”

He glanced over at Kitty, who seemed to have relaxed some, but still seemed uneasy.

“Absolutely none,” Dr. Wu answered. “The stem cells are always donated with informed consent from donors, and always from IVF.”

“But doesn’t removing these cells destroy the embryo?” Tina asked.

“That is true in most cases,” Dr. Roe answered. “But it’s important to remember that they were already destined to be destroyed for one of the reasons I already explained”

“Embryos aren’t the only possible source of stem cells are they? What about stem cells found in amniotic fluid, cord blood, or stem cells taken from adults?” Kitty wanted to know.

“You’ve done your research. I could go into great details if you want,” Dr. Roe told her. “But the bottom line is that none of those sources are very suitable for this type of research or treatment. Stem cells found in amniotic fluid and cord blood are too scarce to provide the number of cells needed, and adult stem cells have a more limited ability to give rise to various cells of the body. There is also a greater risk of contamination due to environmental factors or genetic anomalies. Embryonic stem cells have the greatest chance of working here.”

Kitty nodded, reluctantly. So, if Artie went through with this, the stem cells would come from potential Rachel Berry’s, but at least they weren’t be killing fully developed fetuses.

“What would the procedure be like?” Artie asked.

“Basically, Artie, we would inject stem cell lines that have been stimulated to multiply into your spine, near the damaged part of the spinal cord using a needle similar to what we use for epidural injections for pregnant women and wait for them to multiply and bond with existing spinal nerve cells. This would be done several times.”

He nodded. It was starting to make sense to him.

“So, what benefits can I theoretically expect?” he asked.

“Obviously this is a highly experimental treatment, and the results would not be immediate. But ideally you will begin to regain sensation from the nerves in your legs and below. Over time we hope that you’d regain first gross motor control, followed by fine motor control, assisted by physical therapy.”

“What are the risks to my son?” Nancy asked.

“Obviously there is the possibility of further nerve damage, but judging by where the existing damage is located, even if that happened, it’s unlikely to affect other body functions.”

Since no one else had any questions, they bid the doctors goodbye and headed back to Kitty and Artie’s apartment. The doctors agreed to give Artie some time to think about it, and he told them that he would get back to them with a decision within a few days. If he did decide he was interested in proceeding, they would want to schedule an MRI to confirm the information in his medical records.

The subway ride was quiet, as everyone took the time to absorb what they had been told.

When they reached the apartment, everyone took their coats off and began to talk about what they had heard. Most of them seemed optimistic about what they had been told. Artie seemed cautiously excited. Nancy did as well, but also worried about potential side effects. As before, Kitty remained quiet.

“My opinion hasn’t changed,” Tina told him. “The risks seem minimal to nonexistent -”

“-But they’re still there,” Nancy interjected.

“-And I think you will regret it for the rest of your life if you don’t go for it,” Tina finished. She nodded at Nancy, acknowledging what she said, before facing Artie. “You’re my best friend, Artie, and I know we’ve had our ups and downs over the years, but I think you know that I’ve got your best interest at heart.”

She met his gaze and continued, “I know you tried to hide it, but I saw the way you used to look at the rest of us in glee club during our dance numbers, wishing that you could do the choreography the same as the rest of us; that you didn’t have to be different. It always broke my heart. We can’t change the past, but this could lead to you never having to be different, having to have special accommodations again. Don’t you want that?”

After a moments hesitation, he silently noded.

Kitty sat across the room, struggling to control her temper. Tina was manipulating him into doing what she wanted, not letting him make his own decision! She wanted to lash out and put Tina in her place, but knew that it wouldn’t do any good.

“You know,” she chimed in, “it occurs to me that you might benefit from the point of view of someone who hasn’t heard the doctor’s sales pitch.” She told Artie.

“Why?” Tina asked.

“That’s not a bad idea,” Nancy chimed in.

“Who did you have in mind?” Artie asked.

“Marley and Ryder,” she answered. “I happen to know that they are both free this evening because we’d originally planned a movie night with them before this came up. We could order some pizza and have them come over. Depending on how long the conversation goes, we could possibly still have our movie night; just with more of us.”

Tina gave Kitty a cold glare, but said nothing.

“That sounds like a good idea to me,” Nancy said.

“You had me at pizza,” Artie said with a smile.

Kitty took out her phone and called Marley’s number and extended the invitation, explaining only that they had something important to talk to them about before the movie. Marley told her that she hadn’t made other plans, so assuming Ryder was still available, the two of them would be over in about an hour.

A few minutes later, when Artie was in the bathroom, Kitty was in the kitchen preparing some snacks and refreshments when Tina approached her.

“It’s not going to work, you know?” She baited.

“Excuse me?” Kitty answered in a snarky tone.

“Trying to talk him out of this?”

“I’m not trying to talk him out of anything,” Kitty reminded her. “I already told him that he’s got to make this decision himself. I just want him to think this through from all sides.”

“So do I,” Nancy interjected as she entered the room. “I’m sorry, Tina, I know you think you’re being impartial here, but I watched your reactions at the doctors office and it was obvious that, despite what you said the other day, your mind was made up before the doctors said very much.”

“No, it wasn’t!”

“Yes, it was,” Nancy and Kitty said together.

“The three of us,” Nancy said, “are extremely close to Artie, and we all like to think that we know what is in his best interest. I think it’s a very good idea for Artie to consider the perspective of other good friends who know him, but aren’t quite as emotionally invested as we are.

“Tina, you’ve made your opinions clear, please lay off the hard sell and let him hear what Marley and Ryder have to say without interrupting… for me, and for Artie.

“Very well,” Tina related, “as long as Kitty agrees to do the same-”

“-I do-”

“-and if he asks me anything, I’m going to tell him what I think.”

“I would expect nothing less.”

Just then the bathroom door open and a few moments later, Artie wheeled into the kitchen.

“What’s going on?” He asked.

“We were just helping Kitty with the snacks and refreshments,” Tina answered, grabbing a tray and taking it into the other room. Nancy did likewise and took a stack of plates into the other room.

Twenty minutes or so later the four of them were relaxing in the living room when the doorbell rang. Kitty rose to her feet and answered the door. As expected it was Marley and Ryder whom she greeted with hugs and ushered into the apartment.

“Glad you could make it,” Artie greeted them.

“Wouldn’t miss it!” Ryder told him. “And Marley would never say so, but she was really bummed when you cancelled on us the other day-”

“-Ryder!” Marley interrupted, swatting her boyfriend playfully.

“What?” he asked, innocently. “It’s true!”

“Sorry about that,” Artie said sheepishly. “We had a good reason. That’s actually what we wanted to talk to you about before we watch the movie, if that’s okay?”

“Of course,” Marley assured him, showing no sign of being upset. “We’re all ears!”

“Pizzas are on the way and should be here in about twenty minutes,” Kitty chimed in. “So I hope you’re hungry.”

“The other day,” Artie began, “I received this letter from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital inviting me to a consultation about a possible treatment for my spinal injury. Apparently they still had my name and address from when Tina was looking into the possibility of a treatment way back in high school.”

He handed them the letter. “We went for the consultation appointment this afternoon,” he continued, “and I was wondering if you could give me your honest opinions if I told you about it?”

“Sure,” Ryder said.

“Absolutely,” Marley added, grinning.

“Thanks,” he told them. “That means a lot.”

He launched into a retelling of the details of the appointment. Artie did most of the talking, with Kitty, Tina, and Nancy filling in some of the details as needed. True to their words, Tina and Kitty avoided expressing their opinions. About half way through the explanation, the food came, and they began to eat while listening to the explanation.

“So,” Artie finished, “What are your thoughts? I really want to know what you’re thinking. Please don’t censor yourselves.”

“Wow,” Marley began, “I really had no idea that they could do this!”

“Artie would be one of the very first humans that they try this on,” Tina chimed in. “Because of the enormous success they’ve had in their animal trials, they are about five years ahead of their original schedule.”

“Artie, this is so amazing!” Marley continued, “So you really might be able to walk again?”

“Or maybe even dance,” Tina added.

“That’s assuming a best case scenario outcome,” Artie reminded them. “This has never been done with humans before, and this will still require a lot of physical therapy to back it up. I haven’t had use of my legs since I was 8 years old. That’s a long time – fourteen years!”

“Artie,” Ryder said, speaking for the first time since Artie finished the explanation. “It sounds like it’s going to be a long shot, but you have to go for it, man, because if you don’t then I think you will regret it.”

“There are still risks,” Nancy reminded him.

“Yeah,” Marley acknowledged, “but they are minimal, and the possible gains are really huge! I agree with Ryder.”

“Thanks for the insight guys,” Artie told them. “Kitty, Mom, and Tina have already given me their thoughts, so unless anyone has anything else to add, I guess it’s up to me now.”

“Just one more thing,” Marley added. “If you go through with this, and there is anything that you need, don’t hesitate to call!”

The rest of the group voiced their agreements, and joined Marley in giving him a giant group hug.

“Thanks guys,” Artie said, with tears in his eyes. “That means a lot! I’ll have to sleep on it and think about it for a few days.”

The hug broke up, and Kitty, who also had tears in her eyes, said, “Okay, movie time!”

She showed them the movies she had available, and they chose one of the recent Nicholas Sparks book adaptations.

At the end of the night he thanked them again and they went home.

Later that night in bed, Artie turned to Kitty and asked, “So, What do you really think?”

“I told you-”

“-Sweetie, why don’t you want to tell me what you think?”

She paused for a moment, considering her words before answering, “Because I feel like no matter what I say, you could resent me for it later.”

“What do you mean?” He wanted to know.

“Artie,” she told him, “I told you before that I had really conflicting feelings about this, and I know that what I think has the potential to significantly sway your opinion on this. If I tell you to do it and it doesn’t work, I fear you could resent me for talking you into it, even if you believe at the time that I’m not. If I tell you not to, I fear that you might resent me for not encouraging you to take the risk and see what happened. Either way it puts me in an awkward position, so please just know that I love you and will support you no matter what you decide.”

He gave her a smile. “I could never resent you.”

“And my rational mind knows that,” she told him, “but we both know I have this inner irrational mind which feeds my insecurities and doubts. Please, just don’t press this okay?”

“Okay,” he said, after a few moments of silence to let what she said sink in. “I’ll drop this and make my own decision.”

She snuggled up next to him. “Thank you,” she said, and they kissed. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too.”

She drew him close into her arms. Whatever he decided, she knew they would be okay.

Author’s Note: I understand that there will be some readers who have very mixed feelings about the nature of this plot line for Artie, but I ask you to trust me to deal with it with sensitivity. Artie has been one of my favorite characters since the pilot, and I intend to stay true and fair to him. The underlying theme of Wedding Song is the deep and unconditional love between Kitty and Artie, and will be illuminated by this plot. There will be very dramatic moments, along the way, but I promise you a very heartwarming ending.

Twenty year old Kitty Wilde awoke snuggled up in bed next to her boyfriend Artie Abrams in the apartment the two of them shared in New York, where they both attended college. He was a senior at the Brooklyn Film Academy, and she was a sophomore at NYU. Kitty and Artie had met and fallen in love during her sophomore year at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. He had been a senior honor student who dreamed of making movies, and she had been a sophomore head cheerleader, but despite their age and social differences they’d met and fallen in love in Glee Club. They had started out gradually and cautiously as friends, but by spring the chemistry and passion between the two of them had become undeniable, and they had begun dating just before prom. At first they had kept their relationship private, but when it became apparent that it was going some where, they had take it public. Following her own graduation from WMHS, Kitty relocated to New York to be with him and to attend college herself. Other than a brief separation after he graduated, and a two week tiff between them a couple years ago, they had been together ever since.

His body stirred and he open his eyes, gazing into hers.

“Mmm… Well, hello there…” He said smiling.

“Well, hello there, yourself,” she answered, giving him kiss. “Good morning, sleepy head.”

“Have I told you how much I love you lately?” He asked.

“Yes,” she answered with a sexy grin, “twice, just last night.”

He leaned over nuzzled her neck and began nibbling her earlobe and whispered, “Well, no wonder I was so tired this morning… A certain amazing girlfriend wore me out last night.”

“Mmm,” she cooled. “The pleasure was all mine.”

He moved away from her ear and the two of them shared a passionate kiss.

“I love you so much,” he told her.

“I love you too,” she whispered softly.

She lay her head on his chest and he began running his fingers through her hair. She closed her eyes and smiled in contentment as she lay there, her bare skin against his. She could hear his heart, and she knew that it beat only for her.

Five years ago she could not imagine having the feelings for another person that she had for this man. She never used to believe in romantic love. She’d never really seen that in her own parents marriage, or among her friends, and the few dating relationships she’d had as a teenager had all gone sour, so she came to the conclusion that the romantic love you saw in commercials, television, movies and romance novels, was fiction created to sell things to gullible female consumers.

That all changed as she got to know Artie and her friends in Glee club. She had known there was something different about him from the moment she met him, but because of their differences she hadn’t considered dating him at first, but instead she discreetly became friends with him. Once she joined the cast of the school musical that he co-directed that year and later the Glee club, she’d been able to be more open with their friendship, at least amoung that group. But she had dated other guys and kept everyone at arms length emotionally. When she realized that he was developing a crush on her, she had done her best to discourage it. But he had kept at it and by the time prom rolled around, she realized she was developing reciprocal feelings for him.

They had dated the rest of the school year, including attending his senior prom together, and that had been one of the happiest times of her life. When he graduated, they could not bare to break up, nor had they seen any examples of long distance relationships working so they agreed, at her suggestion that they were allowed to see other people if they wanted during the separation, with the intention of renewing their relationship when she graduated unless things changed for one or both of them. But that had only lasted a few months before they abandoned that idea and just decided to do long distance, and as it turned out, they had beaten the odds and it had worked for them, because four years later they were still together and happy.

Being in New York together had been very good for their relationship. Freed of all of the high school drama, they were free to be themselves and just be together. She was no longer the bitch popular cheerleader and he was no longer the wheelchair geek. They were just Kitty and Artie.

They had been very happy together for the last four years, and in recent weeks she had begun to yearn to take the next step in their relationship.

# # # #

Artie lay there in bed with his girlfriend, the amazing Kitty Wilde with her head on his chest. As he ran his hand through her long, silky soft hair and gazed into her eyes he thought about the last five years of his life.

He felt like the luckiest man in the world. In high school he had been an outsider. Between his high grades, glee club membership, dreams of making movies, as well as his glasses and his wheelchair, few people were willing to be friends with him, and even fewer had been willing to date him. His first girlfriend had been his best friend Tina Cohen-Chang. They had dated off and on their freshman year. But, when she revealed that the stutter she’d had the entire time he’d known her had been fake, they had broken up. Once he’s gotten over the shock and forgiven her for lying, they had gotten back together and dated the rest of the school year and into the summer. But she had begun dating Mike Chang, one of their clubmates, at Asian Camp before she has broken up with Artie, which she did promptly upon getting home. He’d been so distraught over it that the following fall he’d convinced his friend Finn to help him join the football team. Once on the team he began dating cheerleader Brittany Pierce. But when he confessed that he was still in love with Tina, she decided to ‘help’ him get over her by taking his virginity. But rather than be something to celebrate for him, especially in light of how they weren’t sure he was fully functional in that way due to his spinal injuries, it turned out to be traumatic for him when it became apparent that it had meant nothing to her because, by her own admission, she’d slept with half the school. But he had later forgiven her and they had dated for several more months until he found out that she’d been cheating on him with Santana Lopez. The following year he’d met and began perusing Sugar Motta, but she only agreed to date him when she didn’t have any other better options. She never actually agreed to be in an official relationship with him and after about a year of chasing her, he gave up when she started dating Joe Hart. He hooked up with Mrs. Pillsbury’s niece Betty on Valentine’s Day as a rebound to get over Sugar.

He’d been attracted to Kitty Wilde from the moment he met her, and in retrospect he’d probably developed a crush on her fairly early on. He’d been really sad when she had severed ties with he and the rest of the glee club the second week of school after first inviting them to join her lunch crew. But to his surprise she’d continued to be receptive to his efforts to befriend her as long as no one else saw. He wondered if that would end when she didn’t get the role she wanted in Grease, but she surprised him once again by not only excelling in her admittedly small role in the musical, but also saying yes to the invitation to join Glee Club, an idea she’d previously rejected.

At first Kitty was very standoffish in Glee, but once the truth of what had happened between she and Marley (bullying her into an eating disorder) had come out and blown over, she began to mellow, and over time she began to embrace and even seemed to enjoy their Glee Club assignments. In particular he remembered a particular spandex catsuit, and a Spice Girls outfit, not to mention what happened in the ‘Mamma Mia!’ performance during ‘Guilty Pleasures’ week.

She sang and danced and was often partnered with him, once it became apparent that the two of them sounded awesome together. She was one of the strongest and most versatile singers, and clearly one of the the most talented dancers. But, to his surprise, she had never once to his knowledge complained about being partnered with him, the only wheelchaired member.

The more time they spent together the more he got to know her, and the closer they got. She’d dated Puck’s brother Jake for a brief time, and later dated Puck himself, though it later came out that the latter was mostly just for show, and Artie had to admit to being more than a little jealous of them. It wasn’t that he thought he actually had a chance with her, but the thought of her with the two bad boys made him squirm. The school shooting incident had shaken all of them up, but it had shaken her to the core. She’d become genuinely remorseful of her past misdeeds, and begun to apologize to those she’d harmed in the past, including Marley and Unique. She and Artie had bonded after that and also become closer.

Then that spring she’d shocked everyone by sticking out her neck and helped him be honest about his uncertainty, conquer his fears, embraced his passion, and accept his acceptance into film school. Their relationship had never been the same after that and before long they began dating, discreetly at first, but eventually very publicly.

They dated the rest of the year, including going to prom together, and after a few months of being free to see others after he graduated, they had renewed their exclusive relationship and been dating ever since. When she graduated from high school she moved to New York to be with him. He moved out of the Bushwick apartment he’d been sharing with most of the other glee alumni, and the two of them got a place together.

He really loved Kitty more than anyone else besides his parents, and was looking forward to taking the logical next step in their relationship in another two years after they were both out of college.

The two love birds continued to snuggle into the late morning. It was Saturday, and one of the few days of the week that they were able to sleep late, and they had discovered early on in their relationship that physical affection and intimacy, both sexual and non-sexual was an important part of their relationship.

They were kissing again when Kitty’s phone buzzed, and she groaned as she reached over to the nightstand to retrieve it.

She sighed; it was Marley.

“Marley is reminding me that we are doing lunch today,” Kitty told him, starting to get up.

“‘Mmm,” he told her with a grin, “just as I was about to show you how much I loved you for a third time….”

Kirty, stopped in her tracks and said, “Marley can wait,” before tossing her phone aside and returning to her lover’s arms and sharing a passionate kiss with him.

# # # #

“How exactly does that work?” Marley asked in a hushed voice, two hours later. “You know…. Sex with a disabled person….”

“Marley,” Kitty said in full voice, “his penis works just fine!”

Marley blushed a bright crimson, glancing from side to side worried that people would overhear as the two women sat alone in their booth at the Spotlight Diner waiting for their lunches to arrive.

“He still has the use of his hips, in case you forgot from Twerking week in glee club.” Kitty continued, slightly softer, confident that her friend had been suitably embarrassed by her semi-offensive question. “I suppose I do a little more ‘work’ than I would with someone who had full use of his legs, but I’ve never really thought about it because it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that I love him and he loves me, and we’re expressing that love.”

“You two are so adorable,” Marley said. “When are you getting married?” She asked jokingly with a smile on her face, recovering from her momentary embarrassment.

“As soon as he asks me,” Kirty responded with a straight face.

“Wait,” Marley stared at her friend. “You’re serious?”

“You seem surprised…?”

“So, if he asked you tomorrow, you’d say yes?”

“In a New York minute.” Kitty answered confidently.

“You’re sure he’s the one? You’re sure you’re ready to get married?”

“Next month it will be 4 years since we started dating, although we’d known each other for months before that as you know. We’re still together and still as happy as we’ve ever been. It’s time to get ready to take the next step in our relationship,” Kitty told her friend.

“Have you talked about it?” Marley asked.

“Not recently,” she answered, “but a year or so ago we talked about getting married after graduation.”

“Well if you’re ready, why don’t you ask him?” Marley suggested.

“No,” Kitty told her best friend, “I may be a modern woman, but I’m still traditional in some ways too. I want my wedding to be in a church, with a white dress, and I want my boyfriend to propose to me in a romantic way.

“I know that he will propose when he’s ready, and that I will love however he does it, because I love him.”

Just then their lunches arrived, and the topic of conversation turned to the more casual topic of their spring classes.

# # # #

“Artie,” Ryder asked, “I really admire what you seem to have with Kitty. I’ve heard you’ve done your share of dating, how did you know that it was love with her? I mean, there has to be more to it than sex, right?”

The two of them sat together in the the common area of the younger mans dorm while the two girls had lunch.

“Oh, definitely, Ryder,” Artie told his younger friend. “It’s easy to take your clothes off and have sex. People do it all the time. But opening up your self to someome, letting them into your heart; your soul, spirit, thoughts, fears, future hopes and dreams….now that’s being naked.

“Out of all of the women I’ve dated, Kitty is the only one I’ve had that kind or connection with. When I realized that was beginning to happen between Kitty and I, on both sides, that’s when I realized that what was going on between us was real love.”

“I guess I don’t know what you mean,” Ryder explained.

“We both know that when we met her, Kitty was a very closed off person. She used her snark and her flat out meanness to push people away and would rarely if ever do anything nice without an ulterior motive.”

“Yeah,” Ryder answered. “The first time I met her she was torturing Marley, and I called her a bitch.”

Artie chuckled. “Yeah; back then I think she felt threatened and reacted … Negatively … ”

“That’s the understatement of the century,” Ryder added. “She bullied her into an eating disorder.”

“Yes,” Artie said, saddened by the memory. “Like I said, she was downright mean back then. But what you may not know is that she and I formed a sort of discreet friendship shortly after we met, even before she joined glee club. She would have denied it if anyone seemed to notice or heaven forbid actually said anything about it. But we did begin getting to know eachother and she did let me in little by little. She began showing genuine concern for me, and every once in a while she would share a little bit of herself.

“Then, after the school shooting, I was the one she sought comfort with. We spent almost the entire day together afterward. She finally let her guard down and I started to see that what I’d always suspected was true, that deep down inside she wasn’t the person she lead others to believe that she was. After she stuck her neck out, even going so far as to get my mom involved, to get me to embrace my passion and move here for film school, I knew there was something deeper between us.

“As we got to know eachother more openly, both before and after we began dating, I knew that she really cared. She paid attention and shared with me, and vice versa, and out relationship deepened. Our time apart after I graduated, and her reaction to believing that I had moved on, really brought into focus how deeply we cared about eachother.

“It’s hard to explain. But our relationship is the most important thing in our lives and we both know we want to spend the rest of our lives together.

“What brought this on, if I may ask?” Artie wanted to know. “Problems between you and Marley?”

“I don’t know,” Ryder answered. “I guess I’m just trying to figure out where we stand. We’ve been dating since high school, but we’ve been taking it so slow that I wonder if we’re really going anywhere. Do you know what I mean?”

“Yeah,” Artir told him. “There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you really want to know what she’s thinking and feeling, you are going to need to ask her.”

“I guess you’re right,” Ryder responded. “Thanks.”

Later that day, Marley and Artie sat together in the editing room, where he was working on his senior film project that she was helping him with the music for.

“Artie,” she asked him, “can I ask you a question? I think I need some advice from a guy friend.”

“Sure, Marley,” he told her. He stopped what he was doing. “How can I help?”

She pulled her chair closer to him.

“Can we keep this just between the two of us?”

“Of course,” he reassured her.

She paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts, deciding exactly how she was going to word it. Then she took a deep breath and began to speak. “What’s it like actually living with Kitty?”

“Well,” he began. “It’s definitely forced us to get closer, a lot closer. When you’re dating, you typically only see eachother at your best, after you’ve each had the time to primp and prepare. That basically went out the window. We found that we have a lot less privacy and quickly realized that we didn’t know each other a fraction as well as we thought we did. It was a bit of culture shock, getting used to each other’s idiosyncrasies, but I think that overall it’s been really good for our relationship, and I am glad we did it. It’s eliminated the few doubts I had about our future together.”

“That’s good,” Marley responded, hinting. “I know she feels the same way. She’s really looking forward to taking the next step in your relationship.”

But Artie didn’t get the hint and changed the subject.

“Why?” he asked. “Are you thinking about moving in with Ryder?”

“I don’t know,” she answered sheepishly. “How did you broach the subject of moving in togather with Kitty?”

“She didn’t tell you?”

“No,” Marley answered, “She just told me you were moving in together off campus when I asked her if she needed a dorm roommate when we talked about going to college here.”

“Believe it or not, it was her idea,” he told her. “When we reconciled after our separation after I graduated, we decided that once she graduated she would only apply to colleges in and around New York so we could be closer together.”

“Yeah,” she answered. “That much I know.”

“Over the next year and a half, she came to visit me here several times. I was living with the rest of the alumni in Rachel and Kurt’s loft apartment at the time. One thing she noticed right away was that, in addition to the lack of any real privacy – each of our bedroom “walls” we’re little more then sheets – was the loft wasn’t very handicapped friendly. For example I had to go to the YMCA or men’s locker room on campus in order to shower.

“I wasn’t privy to all the details, but she apparently talked to her parents, who were paying for her college since they made too much to get much for financial aid – remember, her dad’s a lawyer – and they agreed to pay for an apartment rather than living in dorms. She explained the situation with me and somehow got them to agree to let me live with her and get a place that met my needs better, under the condition that it was TWO bedroom apartment,” he explained.

Marley rolled her eyes.

“I was eager to escalate our relationship, given the fact that we’d been doing long distance for so long, and not being able to shower in my own home and the lack of privacy was really beginning to bother me, so of course I agreed to it. It also enabled me to bring the rest of my stuff from Lima.”

“That was so awesome of them!” Marley said.

“Yep,” Artie said. “It completely blew me away! I’d always thought that her dad didn’t like me that much.”

“So your future in-laws are paying your rent?” She asked, teasing.

“Yeah,” he told her. “It’s expensive living in New York when you have a college student’s income. I do help out with bills and other expenses just like I did when I was in the loft. For example I pay for most of the groceries with excess scholarship money.”

She nodded.

“So,” Artie asked, changing the subject. “Are you wondering if you and Ryder moving in together is something you want to do?”

“I don’t know,” she answered. “It’s a huge step for us, and we’ve been taking it slow.”

“There’s nothing wrong with taking it slow, but you can’t go slow forever. Have you talked to him about it yet?”

“No,” she answered. “I’m pretty sure he’d be interested if I did, but I’m just afraid of what it would do to our relationship.”

“If you want to advance your relationship, you are going to have to take some risks,” he told her. “If you really want the get to know each other, that’s a sure fire way to do it.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” she confided. “That he’s going to find out things about me that he doesn’t like.” She looked down as if she were ashamed.

“Marley,” Artie said, rolling closer to her, reaching out and placing his hand on her shoulder. “Ryder has been in love with you since the day he first laid his eyes on you. Half the reason our production of Grease was as successful as it was is because he wasn’t really acting when he played opposite of you.” She blushed slightly. “I highly doubt there is anything he could learn about you that would phase him that much.

“Why did you ask me this instead of Kitty anyway?” He asked. “We’re good friends, but we both know you’re closed to her than me.”

“Because you and I have one thing in common that she and I don’t,” Marley answered. “Body image issues. If Ryder and I moved in together it would be very hard to keep some things to ourselves. I remember how uncomfortable you were when they tried to draft you into that glee club calendar in high school.”

He nodded.

“So, you’re talking about nudity here?” He asked. “Forgive me, but I guess that I’ve always assumed that you and he were….intimate by now.”

She nodded, flushing a bright crimson, but understanding what he was saying. She couldn’t blame him because she was the one who brought it up.

“We are, we have been since senior year,” she told him. “But doing it, usually hurriedly, after a date isn’t the same thing as actually living together all the time, and it’s not as if we have the opportunity that often, both living in dorms with roommates. We rarely have a room to ourselves for any length of time. That’s not something you and Kitty have to deal with.”

“What makes you think that Kitty doesn’t have body image issues?” He asked. “Because I can assure you that she does.”

“Are you kidding me? I have a hard time believing the girl who sang ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ with me sophomore year in that cat suit has body issues.”

“Well,” Artie said. “You’ve never lived with her, and clearly you don’t know her as well as you think you do. Trust me, she definitely does. She’s just really good at masking them from most people. I’m surprised she hasn’t said anything in your girl talk sessions.”

“I’m not sure what you are talking about,” she answered, feigning ignorance.

“You’re her BFF, Marley, I have no illusions that you don’t know way more about our relationship than I’m probably comfortable with. But yeah, our mutual body issues are something we’ve had to deal with. But it’s okay because it’s brought us closer, and it’s not an issue between us anymore.”

“Wow,” she said.

“All I can tell you is that if you and Ryder do move in together, it will definitely take your relationship to a new level of intimacy. The question is whether or not the two of you are ready for that. everything I’ve gotten from him myself makes me think he would be receptive to the conversation if you were to bring it up, so I’d say the ball is in your court if you want to have the conversation.”

She smiled, leaned in, gave him a hug, and said, “Thanks Artie, you’re a good friend. You’ve given me a lot to think about.”

“Any time,” he assured her. “You, Ryder, and the other former glee club members are like my brothers and sisters. Well, except for Kitty, of course, because that would be gross. I’ll always be there for you.”

ANB – Chapter 05: A Thousand Miles (Depreciated)

Glee: A New Beginning: Chapter 5: A Thousand Miles
By Wilde Abrams
Authors Notes: I wanted to take a minute to remind my readers that this series was planned when almost nothing was known about about season 6 of Glee so everything at McKinley was AU but the references to the New York stuff still followed cannon for the most part. This story marks the first major divergence. It take place a few weeks after the episode Tested in which Artie behaved in a very uncharacteristic way by hooking up with two different girls and perusing a third (apparently completely forgetting about Kitty) and contracting the clap. In this story, he did date several girls while in New York, because he thought Kitty was doing that same, but did not hook up with them.
For a variety of reasons this story jumps ahead and takes place almost 2 months later, the week before thanksgiving.
* # * # *
For the next two months things settled down at McKinley. Drama club decided to forego doing a fall musical, and spend more time and resources and do their annual musical in the spring. The club continued to meet twice a week and practiced acting from plays in books already owned by the English department. They planned to begin preparing for the spring musical as soon as they got back from their winter, post holiday break.
Little by little, Marley began to come out of the funk she’s been in ever since she and Jake had broken up. She and Ryder had been seen hanging out again, but she insisted that they were just friends.
Things looked up a little bit for Kitty as well. After Bree realized that Kitty had real power as Principal Sylvester’s assistant, she began to back off and leave she and the others former glee members alone, and for the most part the cheerleaders and jocks just ignored them. They once again began to socialize in public, ever with Unique. The group of them began to eat lunch together again, and sometimes other Drama club members joined them.
Kitty and Betty continued to take verbal jabs and make evil glares at each other, but there were no further physical altercations, and with no witnesses to the first one, the matter was officially dropped. The red mark on Betty’s face warranted nothing but an inquisitive look from Coach Roz.
Mid-Term grades were down pretty much across the board at McKinley, frustrating Principal Sylvester, who was mystified as to the reason. Several key football players and Cheerios were in danger of becoming academically ineligible. She wrote it off as a fluke and decided to wait till the end of the semester before disciplining her teachers.
# # #
The Monday morning before thanksgiving, Kitty was having lunch with Marley, Ryder, Unique, and Dottie, when she saw a familiar face Approach.
What is she doing here, she thought. Oh my God, has smithing happened to him?.
She suddenly felt sick of her stomach.
“Kitty,” the woman said.
“Yes, Mrs. Abrams? What are you doing here?” Then after a moment she added, “Is Artie okay?”
“Artie is fine,” Mrs Abrams reassured her.
Relief flowed over her when she heard those words. Despite deciding to give him the freedom to live his own life, and date if he wanted to, she was still very much in love with Artie Abrams. She didn’t know what she would do if something happened to him.
She felt the eyes of the rest of the group, on her and she was brought back to reality. “Oh, I’m sorry. Everyone this is Artie’s mom, Mrs. Abrams-”
“-I keep telling this one to call me Nancy, Mrs. Abrams makes me seem like an old maid-”
“-sorry, Nancy Abrams. Nancy, this is Marley, Ryder, Unique, and Dottie. ”
She greeted each of of them in turn and exchanged pleasantries about how much they liked her son.
“Well it was nice to meet all of you,” she told them. “I’m so happy Artie has so many good friends, but if it’s okay, I’d like to steal Kitty away for a few minutes.”
Amid a chorus of sure no problems Kitty rose to her feet and said, “I was done anyway, I’ll see you guys later in gle-drama club,”
She rose to her feet, tossed what was left of her lunch tray and joined Nancy, who lead her away from the crowd of students.
When they were safely alone Nancy asked, “How are you doing Kitty? I haven’t talked to you since Artie moved to New York.”
“I’m doing okay,” Kitty said not sure what how much she should tell her.
“How are things between you and my son?” She asked. “He doesn’t really tell me much.”
“We’re doing fine as far as I know,” Kitty answered. “We … we talk or email about once a week or so like we agreed that we would.”
“Yeah, but how are you really doing?” The older woman pressed.
Kitty could see that the usual pleasantries would not suffice, so she stepped closer to the her and lowered her voice and said, “I have to admit it’s been kind of hard. I miss him.”
“I thought you loved him?” She asked.
“I do,” Kitty said.
“Then I don’t get it. why did you agree to this ‘open relationship’? That’s the term right? Where you’re allowed to see other people?”
“We didn’t use that exact word, but I guess that’s what it is,” Kitty told her.
After a slight hesitation, she added, “That was actually my idea,” she lowered her head, averting her eyes. “I wanted to give him the freedom to do what he wanted, and for him to be attached to me didn’t seem fair to him when we’re hundreds of miles apart.”
But Nancy Abrams wasn’t buying it. “Cut the crap Kitty! If you love someone that much then you want to be with them no matter what. What’s really going on?”
Kitty leaned in even father and lowered her gaze before she continued almost at a whisper. “I was afraid alright. All year last year we watched what happened when our friends in the glee club were separated from the ones that they loved. Look at Kurt and Blaine, Tina and Mike, Finn and Rachel, Brittany and Santana. Every one of them had problems when they tried to do long distance relationships! They grew apart. One would meet someone else, or one would cheat on the other one or whatever, but they all had problems, and the simple fact is I’m afraid of getting hurt.
“For years I protected myself from being close with people and Artie is the first one in a long time that I let get close to me to the point where he could hurt me even if it was unintentional.”
“Kitty you and Artie are not them. I know my son. Artie loves you,” she reassured her, placing her hand on the younger woman’s shoulder, “He would never cheat on you, especially given his past track record with girls cheating on him.”
Kitty slowly nodded. “My head and my heart know that, but there is this part inside of me that can’t or won’t believe that anyone could love me that much.”
The two women continued to walk through more minutes in silence before the elder woman broke the silence by asking, “Do you know when you are going to get to see him again?”
“Unfortunately no,” Kitty answered. “No-one here seems to have a desire to visit the alumni in New York, and I haven’t heard anything about he coming home for a visit.”
“I take it by your answer you wanted to go see him.”
“Yes, of course,” she told her. “But I can’t go by myself and none of my friends seem to be interested.”
Nancy Abrams nodded hesitating for a moment
“Can you keep a secret?”
“Of course,” Kitty said.
“Artie’s dad and I are going to be going down there to visit him over Thanksgiving weekend. This is the first time we’ve done anything like this since the divorce. We’ve rented a hotel suite with a fold out couch with a bed on it and we were wondering if you would like to come with us.”
Kitty smiled, “Are you kidding me?”
“Now you would need to pay for your plane ticket and some of your expenses however the room is paid for.”
Kitty smiled broadly, hugging the older woman, “Oh thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you!”
Then she noticed people around them staring and went back to her more reserved self.
“We also have to get your parents permission of course.”
“I don’t think that’s going to be a problem,” Kitty said. “Once she got to know him, my mom really starting to like Artie.”
“Ok good. But remember this is a secret. I asked Rachel for all the details on the sly and she probably thinks I’m being overprotective mom, but we’re going to go down there and surprise him. Only Rachel and Sam know.”
Kitty nodded. “I promise. Thank you so much for this. I miss Artie so much!”
“We all do, dear,” the older woman told her. “And I’m sure he’s missed you as well.”
After a few more moments of silence the older woman added, “Okay I’ve got to go I’ll text you with the details. Keep it to yourself as much as possible, just in case any of your friends forget and happen to talk to Artie. Make sure anyone who does knows it’s going to be a surprise. ”
And with that she was gone.
# # #
That evening Kitty talked to her parents about the idea, and while her dad was still a little skeptical, and neither of her parents were thrilled about her missing Thanksgiving, her mom was really excited that Kitty was going to get to see Artie again. Both of her parents liked the change that came over her when she and Artie were together, and they gave her their blessing, as well as the money she would need for the trip.
As she lay in bed Kitty began thinking about Artie and how excited she was now that she was going to finally get to see him again. They hadn’t seen each other in the flesh since he’d moved to New York the first week of August. She didn’t realize until she started talking to Mrs. Abrams how much she really missed him.
Mrs. Abrams was right; this open relationship thing sucked, but Kitty still had her insecurities and her fears. She didn’t know what she was going to do, but decided to focus instead on how excited she was finally get to see him again.
This was going to be an amazing weekend.
# # #
Kitty was on cloud nine all day Tuesday. Whenever people asked what was up, she retorted with something snarky. She didn’t want to give anything away but it was hard not to. It was finally happening. She was going to get to see her Artie!
# # #
Wednesday morning Kitty skipped class and headed to the auditorium during her study hall and began to sing, A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton.Making my way downtown, walking fast,
Kitty:
Faces pass and I’m home bound
Staring blankly ahead, just making my way,
Making my way through the crowd

And I need you, / And I miss you, / And now I wonder,
If I could fall, into the sky
Do you think time, would pass me by?
‘Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight

It’s always times like these when I think of you
And I wonder if you ever think of me
‘Cause everything’s so wrong and I don’t belong
Living in your precious memory

Cause I’ll need you,
And I miss you,
And now I wonder

If I could fall, into the sky,
Do you think time, would pass me by?
‘Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you,
Tonight.

And I, I
Don’t wanna let you go
I, I
Drown in your memory
I, I
Don’t wanna let this go
I, I don’t

Making my way downtown, walking fast
Faces pass and I’m home bound
Staring blankly ahead, just making my way
Making a way through the crowd

And I still need you,
And I still miss you,
And now I wonder

If I could fall, into the sky,
Do you think time, would pass us by?
‘Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you

If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
‘Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you
If I could just hold you
Tonight

If if could fall into the night
Do you think time would pass me by?
‘Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could see you
If I could hold you
Tonight

Kitty smiled, as the music finished. It was finally happening. She was finally going to see him!
“Someone’s in a good mood!” Marley said, startling Kitty.
“Geez! Marley, you scared me!”
She turned to see her best friend enter from the fourier.
“You’re in a good mood, and happier than I’ve seen you in months,” Marley observed. “Than can only mean one thing… When is Artie getting in?”
“That’s a bit of an exaggeration isn’t it?” Kitty retorted. “And he’s not. I’m going to New York with his parents to see him. Keep that under your Newsies hat, it’s a surprise. ”
“How did you manage that?” Her best friend wanted to know. “And no, not really. You’ve had a big gray cloud following you around since the day you saw him off back in August.”
Kitty rolled her eyes. “That’s what his mom wanted to to talk to me about Monday. She invited me. We’re leaving after lunch.”
Marley walled up and gave her a big hug! “I’m so happy for you! Say hi to him for me.”
“I will, thanks,” she told her. “And remember, mums the word.”
“I won’t say anything,” she told her.
# # #
Kitty skipped lunch that day and met the Abrams’ back at her house where she returned her car and retrieve her suitcase and carry on bag.
This was the first time she was meeting Artie’s dad, James. He seemed nice enough, but she spent most of the trip jabbering with Nancy in the car, at the airport, and finally on the plane until they decided to nap the rest of the flight.
# # #
When the plane landed and they’d retrieved their luggage and carry-ons, they were met by Sam Evans, who had been elected to be their guide until the following day.
Kitty gave him a hug. They’d never been particularly close, but had spent a lot of time together preparing for nationals when Mr. Schue had decided to mix things up for the competition. The nationals they had lost. The nationals they had performed in to honor Finn. The competition they should have won. That she was sure they would have won if they hadn’t decided to do things different. But Mr. Schue had wanted to feature the seniors. And they had lost. No, she didn’t want to think about that. She wanted to concentrate on the positive, not the regrets of their past. “Good to see you Sam,” she told him.
“Nice to see you too Kitty,” he told her. “I wasn’t really expecting you though.”
“Change of plans,” Nancy told him. “I hope that’s not a problem.”
“Not at all,” Sam said. “Rachel and Kurt have a tradition of welcoming anyone who doesn’t have family in town to Thanksgiving dinner. We’ll just have to tell them to plan on one more ‘friend’ for dinner.”
Sam got them on a cab and delivered them to their hotel and helped them get their stuff into the room before excusing himself, telling him he’d be there around 9am to bring them to the Bushwick apartment to surprise everybody.
Kitty was impressed with the room. It was one of the nicer ones, not just a tourist hotel like she’d expected. They really spared no expense. The room was a suite, like Nancy had said. There was a bedroom with two queen sized beds in it, a spacious bathroom, a small kitchenette, and as promised, a main room with a hide-a-bed couch.
She momentarily wondered if the two beds were standard with the room or requested. But she shoved that thought out of her head. It really wasn’t any of her business weather Artie’s parents still slept together even though they were divorced.
Kitty unpacked her things and then excused herself to freshen herself up before they needed off to the hotel restaurant for dinner.
After taking a shower, redoing her makeup, and changing into clean clothes, Kitty reached into her purse and retrieved the container of birth control pills she had hidden in an inner compartment. When she and Artie had gotten serious, she had gotten her own from the same source as she’d gotten them from for Unique. After a few weeks apart, Kitty had stopped taking them, but resumed when she found about this trip. She didn’t know what might happen, but she wanted to be prepared. She hoped four days would be enough time to have enough of the drug to be effective if it came to that. She also had condoms AND some very thin lingerie tucked away in the same purse.
When Nancy hollered that they were ready, Kitty put it out of her head and joined them on their walk to the hotel restaurant.
# # #
At the restaurant, the three of them shared a table and Kitty spent most of the meal answering questions about herself from Artie’s mom and dad. Apparently James had wanted to meet Kitty for a long time since Artie had been talking about her quite a bit when they’d been dating.
# # #
Kitty hadn’t slept a lot the previous night, but was now so exhausted that she was asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.
That night she dreamed about Artie: eyes, his touch, the filing of his arms around her when she sat in his lap, his lips that felt like pillows, the feeling of his body against hers when they made love, and had the best nights sleep she’d had in ages.
# # #
The following morning Kitty awoke bright and early. She wanted to be ready when Sam got there and she still had to decide what she was going to wear from that three finalists she’d brought with her. She finally settled on a nice blouse and skirt that she thought he would like.
Sam arrived just when he said he would, and the four of them headed off to the subway. 45 minutes and 3 transfers later, they were approaching the building their apartment was located in.
When they began to ride the elevator up to the apparent, Kitty started to get nervous. Nancy, who was watching her whispered in her ear, “relax, it’s be fine. Breathe.” She hugged her shoulder and smiled.
Kitty smiled back as the door open to reveal Rachel, who clearly hadn’t been clued into the fact that she was coming either, but recovered quickly.
“Nice to see everyone,” she greeted them. “Welcome. If you’ll follow me.”
And she lead them into the main part of for apartment where a large group sitting down. She could see his chair faced away from her. Mercedes, Blaine, Kurt, and a number of other people she didn’t know were sitting around. She took them to be other NYADA students. Then she noticed the brunette sitting next to Artie.
“Everybody, we have a few more guests.” then she asked, “Artie I believe you know these ones…”
“MOM!” He shouted as he turned his chair, and Nancy come over to hug her son. His dad followed suit.
“Everybody,” he announced, “these are my parents, Nancy and James Abrams.”
Then seeing Kitty, who glanced at him shyly, he added, “and this is my- this is Kitty.”
The brunette suddenly seemed very uncomfortable.
Kitty’s eyes widened in surprise…

Author’s Endnotes:
I dont usually do cliffhangers but figured it would be more dramatic.
Oh, and for for record. The rough draft of this was written long before the spoilers of the song being used in season 6 came out. It was always my intention to have Kitty sing this song before she saw him again.

ANB – Chapter 04: Marissa & Kitty, and Betty, Oh, My! (Depreciated)

Glee – Season Six: A New Beginning: Chapter 4: Marissa & Kitty, and Betty, Oh, My!

By WildeAbrams

Authors Notes: hello all, sorry it has been so long since my last update! First I want to clear up a misconception that I’ve run into. Some of you have noticed that I started a new story called The Ballad of Kitty and Artie, leading at least one of you to believe that perhaps I had abandoned this story. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I haven’t stopped. I just hit a dry spell on this one. I’ve actually been writing both simultaneously, because they are two parts of the same story arc and I decided that I needed a little inspiration. I’ve established that Kitty goes back to being her old b*** self without Artie and the glee club around anymore, but I needed to get her right, so I went back to the beginning.

This chapter is going to feature interaction between Kitty and Betty, as well as Marisa (the image of catfish) and Ryder, so I need Kitty to be at her bitchiest lol. Trust me, I have outlines and a lot of stuff written, so none of this will be abandoned.

I’ve also gone back through all of the episodes as well as my notes, and discovered that I had gotten some of the chronology wrong (specifically the date of the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival, which has to match up with the date of the birth of Will and Emma’s son, and Rachel’s Broadway Debut). So I needed to rework the outline to accommodate that. Now that I’ve figured that stuff out, updates should come faster.

I write what I’m inspired to write, so there’s also the fact that I have a bunch of stuff from season 4 written but can’t publish it until the early stuff is done.

For those of you who have read the first three chapters, you probably want to go back and re-read them, as I’ve reuploaded them with revisions. I have a much better idea where the story is going than i did when i started, and needed to clarify some things.

I hope you enjoy the latest update!

During the early morning hours, Kitty Wilde walked through the halls of the school beginning with the former choir room which was now a computer lab, through familiar halls toward the auditorium as she sang So Far Away:

So far away
Doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn’t help to know you’re just time away

Long ago I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again could only do me good
Oh, how I wish I could
But you’re so far away

One more song about moving along the highway
Can’t say much of anything that’s new
If I could only work this life out my way
I’d rather spend it being close to you

But you’re so far away
Doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn’t help to know you’re so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothing else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don’t come to own me
There’s so many dreams I’ve yet to find

But you’re so far away
Doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn’t help to know you’re so far away

As she ended up at the photo of for nationals win photo hanging on the wall in the annex of the auditorium, she kissed her fingers and then affixed them to the photo of her boyfriend Artie Abrams.

Marissa sat in her history class listening to Mr. Schue drone on about some civil war battle and tried to make sense of what had happened in Drama Club.

She had been pleasantly supposed to see Ryder, the cute boy who had serenaded her with that sweet Elton John song the previous spring, but then proceeded of ignore her for the rest of the year. She understood that he might have been uncomfortable around her for a while, given the fact that he’d been catfished by someone using her image. But it had been seven months. Shouldn’t he have gotten over it at least a little? She had really been looking forward to drama club this year, but if things didn’t get any better, she might have to bow out. She’d always been the shy quiet type and if she was going to use drama to get out of her shell then she was going to need to feel comfortable in the club and right now she didn’t.

*/*/*

Kitty sat in the lunch commons and glared at “the bitch”, as she had begun to think of Betty. It was easier than “the girl in the wheelchair with the disturbingly massive boobs,” as she’d always refer to her. She was eating with a group of Cheerios, including Celeste and Suzanne, two girls who had previously been in Kitty’s lunch crew.

Kitty, meanwhile, ate alone. Ever since Principal Sylvester had promoted Bree to Captain of the Cheerios, she had discouraged the others from socializing with her as punishment for foiling her plan to humiliate Tina at prom the previous spring. She knew that Bree would like nothing better than to kick her off the squad entirely, but she was one of the strongest members, and Coach Roz would never allow that.

Things had lessened a bit since Kitty had become Principal Sues assistant and laid down the law with Bree, but she knew it was far from over.

For now she had to bide her time until the opportunity arose to destroy her enemies.

Normally she would eat with Marley and Ryder or Unique, but they were off somewhere else today. A year ago, she would have been eating at the popular table with cheerleaders and jocks, but she had given up that privilege by joining and befriending the Glee Club that previous year and dating Artie. Initially she’d been able to keep her feet in both worlds, but when Bree – the most vile human being on the planet – was made Captain of the Cheerios the previous spring, she’d been forced to make a choice. And she chose Glee.

Initially she’s been completely comfortable with her choice because it had gotten her some real friends, as well as her boyfriend Artie. At times like this, however, she felt a small part of her regret her choice. It sucked being alone, and she really missed having a boyfriend who actually went to school with her. Phone conversations and video chat via Google Hangouts were just not the same, and had been happening less and less.

Betty sat at lunch with her new friends Celeste and Suzanne telling them about her past accomplishments as Captain of her old cheerleading squad, and featured soloist of Vocal Adrenaline. They seemed genuinely impressed with her accomplishments, but Betty was having a hard time following the conversation. She could practically feel a Kitty’s glare on the back of her head. Finally the other girls noticed the source of her distraction.

“How much longer are you going to put up with her glaring at you like that?” Celeste wanted to know.

“Hmm?”

“Kitty. We’ve all noticed her watching you with that cold glare of hers. You’re a senior. She’s a junior. Put her in her place.” Celeste explained.

“I’m new here, and to the squad. I don’t want to antagonize anyone and make any enemies this close to the beginning of the year.” She explained. “Just trying to minimize the drama.”

“You don’t really need to worry about that.” Suzanne added. “The only friends she has left are the former glee club group. Everyone else stopped caring about her when she started dating Artie Abrams, and most of the jocks and cheerleaders started to hate her when she crossed Bree last spring over the prom queen election.”

“What do you mean?”

“For the previous two years, prom queen has been some loser from glee club, and Bree and the rest of us felt that one of the three of us Cheerios who were nominated should win. At the time Kitty was the most popular. But not only did she decide not to campaign for it but she put her support behind that other glee candidate. We tried to convince her of the error of her ways, even going so far as to make posters for her. But she tore them down, and replaced them with ones for her friend.”

“Then when it became obvious that it was a losing battle,” Celeste continued, “Kitty crossed us and attempted to save her friend from being Carried at prom by an underclassmen girl Bree bribed. She wasn’t completely successful but still crossed us.”

“What’s her problem with you anyway?” Suzanne wanted to know.

“I hooked up with Artie Abrams at my aunt and uncles almost wedding. From the way he pursued me I thought was single.”

“When was this?”

“Last Valentine’s day weekend.”

“Um, Kitty and Artie didn’t start dating until just before prom in April. At the time Kitty was dating that creepy Puckerman guy.”

“Jake?”

“No, his older brother …. I think his name is Noah, but everyone called him Puck. He was like 20 years old and creeped most of us out. She started dating him after Jake dumped her after and refused her attempts to get back together. ”

“Then why does she even care that I hooked up with and dated Artie?”

“I think Kitty’s been in love with Artie pretty much since she met him.” Suzanne added. “We used to be friends, and I saw her watching and talking to him several times last year. She acted like a total bitch when people were watching, and very different when she didn’t think anyone was. She wasn’t at the wedding, but when I texted her that everyone was hooking up, she seemed jealous when I told her about you.”

“That makes sense I guess.” Betty realized.

“She was so obvious. But she would never date him because of his social standing until just before prom when she had a change of heart. She’s got it bad. Even now with him graduated and the two of them agreeing that they can see other people, she’s still pining over him. She’s still got his pic in her locker and on her phone. I’ve seen her looking at it several times.”

“Wait I thought they were broken up?”

“Yeah so does everybody else…. But tell that to Kitty.” Celeste said. “But she thinks they are going to pick things up when she graduates.”

Betty rolled her eyes. “If the way he pursued me is any indication, I’m sure he’s bedded two or three other women by now.”

“Why would anyone want to screw someone in a wheelchair?” Celeste asked, then realizing what she said, added, “sorry…”

“You’d be surprised,” Betty responded, showing no indication that she was insulted.”I’ve bedded some of the hottest jocks at Carmel. But believe it or not Artie Abrams was and continues to be the best I’ve ever had.”

“Really?”

“Yes, I may be in a chair, but I’m also a cheerleader, and I have this.” She hefted her ample breasts.

“I meant about him being the best,” she clarified with a giggle.

The bell rang, and the three of them gathered their belongings to go to the next class.

“Thanks for the insight ladies,” Betty told them

“No problem.”

*/*/*

Kitty watched this exchange from across the quad. The longer the three girls talked the angrier she got. When the bell rang, she saw Betty wheel off I’m the opposite direction of the other two. Kitty tossed her trash and darter after Betty.

“Hey, crippy-slutwhore.” She called out.

When they were out of the crowd of students, Betty stopped, turned, and looked Kitty over up and down condescendingly, “What do you want, looser?”

“What’s your angle?”

“Excuse me?”

“What are you plotting?”

“I’m not plotting anything except that best route to my next class.”

“I think you know what I mean.”

“Why don’t you tell me and then you will be sure that I know what you mean.”

“Why are you here?”

“Relax, itty bitty titty Kitty, I know you’re jealous that I hooked up with your ex boyfriend, but news flash you weren’t together at the time.”

“He’s not my ex-”

“Um, news flash! You’re allowed to see other people. That’s called breaking up.”

“Neither of us is actually dating anyone, and you had better not be planning to try to steal him back!”

“No thanks. He may be good in the sack, but he’s also boring as hell. He totally ruined that X-Men movie for me talking throughout it,” Betty told her.

“And as for him not seeing anyone else…., Um, I find that head to believer. That boy has a voracious sexual appetite, and if you made the mistake of giving him a free pass to see others, I’m sorry but he’s definitely been screwing around.”

Kitty was so angry about the way this bitch was disparaging Artir that she lost her temper.

“You take that back!”

“Why? it’s true!”

And with that Kitty lashed out and slapped her full on the face.

The two of them just stare at eachother for a moment, before Kitty groaned, turned and stormed off.

Betty sat there stunned.

That afternoon Marissa was sitting in the library during her study period when Unique approached her.

“Do you mind if I sit down,” she asked.

“Go ahead,” the younger girl responded.

“I’m Unique,” she began. “I thought we should talk.”

“I know who you are. I remember from drama club.” She asked. “Talk about what?”

“I think I owe you an apology and an explanation,” Unique began.

“For what?” She wanted to know.

“I’m the reason Ryder is treating you so poorly.”

“You’re the catfish ?”

“You know about that?”

“Yes. ”

“I’m sorry I chose your image,” Unique told her. “I just needed something that I thought he would like and that looked nothing like me.”

“So you had a crush on him?”

“Yes, but there is more to it than that….” She she launched into the story of how Ryder had refused to acknowledge that Unique was a girl because she had a penis and keep calling her dude. She had adopted this alter ego to try go get him to see things differently, but found herself falling in love and gotten in too deep to stop. Things had eventually come to a header and he’d threatened to leave glee. They eventually worked things out, but things were never the same after that.

“So does that mean you’re over him?” Marissa wanted to know.

“Yeah, pretty much,” Unique told her, but seeing the hopeful look in Marissa’s eyes, she added, “Don’t get your hopes up though. That boy only has eyes for Marley Rose, and ever since she dumped Jake Puckerman, he’s gotten it into his head that he’s got a chance with her.”

Marissa deflated.

“Don’t worry girl, she said. “There are plenty of other fish I’m the sea,” and put her hand on the younger girl’s shoulder.

That afternoon Kitty was asked to come into Principal Sylvester’s office where Emma and Betty Pillsbury were sitting. Betty had a noticeable red mark on her cheek, which Kitty pretended to ignore.

“Kitty,” Sue began, “what would you say if I told you that this student had accused you of assault!”

“I would say their she has no proof,” Kitty answered matter-of-factly.

“What do you call this!?” Betty said angrily, gesturing to the swollen mark on her face.

“Obviously the result of some form of accident,” Kitty answered. “You really ought to be more careful. If your face swells up so much that it can’t be covered up with makeup, Coach Roz might suspend you from the Cheerios…wouldn’t that be a shame?”

Kitty gave her an evil grin.

“You did this!” Betty told her angrily.

“Do you have a witnesses?”

“Of courses not! You made sure to do it in an empty corridor.”

“Then it’s her word against mine,” Kitty concluded, addressing Principal Sylvester. “And in this case I think my word as a third year student and student secretary holds more weight then this newbie.”

“Good enough for me.” Sue said.

“Aren’t you going to do something!?” Emma asked.

“No,” Sue told her, “I’m not.”

Both Pillsbury women a stormed our.

When they were alone, Sue asked, “Did she deserve it?”

“She was attacking the character of my man,” Kitty said simply.

“Oh, How is Stumbles?” Sue asked.

“Fine,” Kitty told her

As Kitty turned to leave, Sue added, “Be more careful next time.”

*/*/*

Ryder Lynn walked into the study hall and approached Marissa who was sitting at the table.

“Mind if I join you?” He asked.

“Are you sure you want to?” She asked. “I mean my presence might be too traumatic for you,” she added sarcastically.

“I deserved that,” he told her. “Look, I know that you are aware of what happened last spring with Unique…”

She nodded.

“And if you remember from the day we met, it really shook me up,” he added.

She nodded, “yeah.”

“Well the truth is if really shook me to the core. I lashed out at my friends, threatened to quit Glee Club, and really began to question a lot of things,” he explained. “Now I know it’s not your fault, but I couldn’t help but be reminded of that when I saw you, the physical manifestation of what happened -”

“- and I totally get that, that’s why I kept my distance the rest of last year,” Marissa added. “But it’s been like 7 months!”

“-and I should have gotten over it by now,” he added. “You’re right. I’ve been acting like a dick to you. That’s not fair, and I’m sorry.”

He took her hand.

She smiled, and said, “you’re forgiven, as long as you make an effort to change your behavior.”

“Deal,” he promised. “I really am sorry.”

“I know,” she told him with a smile. “Now that we’re take care of that. Can I maybe give you my number…!”

“Um, I’m sorry,” he responded. “But Marley is single now and I just feel I need to peruse that more before giving up on it.”

She smiled and added, “I understand. If that doesn’t work out or when you get tired of chasing after her, let me know.”

He nodded.

And so we have it. Most of the conflict has been resolved or calmed down. I know the story has gotten kind of dark, but the next chapter is a little happier so stay tuned.

Chapter 3: Drama

By Wilde Abrams

Monday morning, Kitty wasted no time assuming her new role as Principal Sue’s new Head Bitch. She arrived bright and early and took her place at the desk in the outer office.

She was just finishing up setting the desk up the way she wanted it when her nemesis strode into the office. When she saw Kitty there any stopped in her tracks.

Bree looked her up and down in a condescending way and asked, “What are YOU doing here?”

“Oh,” Kitty began, relishing this, “haven’t you heard? I’m Principal Sylvester’s new personal assistant?”

Bree took a moment to take this in, but decided not to comment. “Whatever. I need to see her.”

“Do you have an appointment?’

“I don’t need an appointment!”

“I’m afraid you do. Principal Sylvester is a very busy woman and if she dropped everything and made time every time someone decided to drop by she would never get any work done.”

Kitty glanced at her planner. “I can fit you in at 3:30 this afternoon….”

“That’s when Cheerios practice is,” Bree reminded her.

Kitty gave her an evil smile. “Well you could always tell me what you want and I could go over it with her.”

Bree was taken aback in a rare moment of speechlessness and Kitty took full advantage of it.

“Now this is how it’s gonna be. I’m the new Head Bitch In Charge … You may be the captain of the Cheerios, at least for now, but every student and club goes through me if they need something from Principal Sylvester. If you want my support and cooperation then here’s how it’s gonna be.

“As of right now the torturing of Unique is over. Further, you will stop your active attacks on former glee club members….and most importantly…. You will not tell me who I can and can not socialize with.

“If you can comply with that then we will have a decent working relationship. If not, I will do everything in my substantial power to block every proposal you and request that you put forward.”

“This isn’t over,” Bree responded.

“No,” Kitty responded. “It’s just the beginning.”

Bree stormed out and Kitty smiled.

*#*#*

With the glee club gone, Mr. Schuster suddenly found that he had a lot of free time on his hands and decided that he would be able to put his energy into the drama club this year. The four years he’d run New Directions, he hadn’t been able to give that club all of the attention it deserved, and the last two years he’d taken significant steps back because the New Directions was requiring more of his time, going so far as to completely delegate the fall musical to others the previous year. This year he vowed to make it up to the club. Normally the club would begin meeting just before tryouts for the fall musical, but this year he held the first meeting the fourth week of school, hoping to get people who were interested involved before their other extracurricular activities were set.

Since the choir room had been turned into a computer lab, he had to use the auditorium for meetings. This didn’t really bother him, because truth be told he thought that practicing in the same space as you performed in would help get the students more comfortable. That was part of why he used the auditorium so much with Glee.

In his first meeting he got a nice group of both familiar and new faces. As he expected, the remainder of the former Glee Club members were there: Jake, Marley, Ryder, Wade/Unique, and Kitty. He and Emma’s niece Betty had also shown up. He also recognized Dottie Kazatori and a few students from his previous and current history classes.

Among the new and unrecognized students was a young blonde girl. He notice some uneasiness between she and Ryder, and wondered what the story was there…

He also saw some apparent hostility between Kitty and Betty, and made a mental note to ask them about it. He didn’t want drama (so to speak) right out of the gate if he could help it.

Surprisingly he also saw three other members of the Cheerios. If Sue were still running the cheerleaders he might suspect that one or more of them had been sent to spy on him, but coach Roz Washington was more direct than that, and since the Drama Club only met weekly, and had a very minimal budget, he could not imagine Sue having any problems.

“Good afternoon,” he said. “I’d like to welcome you to the first meeting of the Drama Club this year. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Mr. Schuster, and I along with Coach Bieste, who couldn’t be here today because she’s having football tryouts, will be the drama club advisors for the year. In addition to our weekly meetings we will put on two productions this year. The fall production is traditionally a miscal. In recent years we’ve done both Grease, and West Side Story.”

He began handing out a sheets of paper. “Drama is all about self expression, it is an opportunity to express parts of yourself that you normally would not express. In order to do that, this needs to remain a safe space. Everyone here needs to know that what happens and is said will stay with the group. For that reason, I am asking that each of you sign these confidentiality agreements. Those of you who were in Glee Club will recognize the form as we used it in there as well. You can also all rest assured that coach Bieste and I will also keep what goes on here confidential as well, to the extent allowed by law.”

“What do you mean?” The new blonde asked.

“There are laws that require teachers and school staff to report things like child abuse or neglect that we suspect or is disclosed to us,” he told her. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Ryder shift uncomfortably in his chair. “But other than that, you can be assured that what happens In here stays in here.”

There were nods of agreement from the former glee club members and a couple others, but clearly some of the others were not yet on board with the idea.. “I realized that some of you are being taken by surprise by this, so I’m giving everyone till the beginning of the next meeting to turn the these in. Those who are comfortable can drop them off on your way out.

“For now, I’d like to take a moment to go around the room and introduce ourselves and explain why we chose to become members of this club. I’ll start. My name is Will Schuester. Most people call me Mr. Schue. I’m married to you guidance counselor, Mrs. Pillsbury-Schuster. I spent about 2 years as a substitute teacher in the district, and I’ve been a teacher here at McKinley for 14 years. I taught Spanish for about a dozen years, and then moved to history 2 years ago. I’ve been one of the Drama Club advisors most of my time here, and was director of our glee club The New Directions for 4 years until it was disbanded last spring due to budget cuts -”

“- I thought it was because you didn’t win nationals,” the Cheerio with the neck brace chimed in.

“-like I said,” he corrected, “because we didn’t win, our budget got cut. I was a member of the National Champion Show Choir team here in 1993, and when I was your age I dreamed of being a professional singer and being the next Vanilla Ice or a star on Broadway …. But over time my dream evolved, and I became a teacher who inspired my student to reach for theirs. Kitty, how about you go next.”

“Hi everybody. I’m Kitty Wilde. I’m a junior this year and I’m here because I enjoy performing, and am hoping to get a better role in this years musical than last year.” There were chuckles from the former glee members. Despite an excellent performance Kitty was not happy playing a secondary role, something she let everyone know many times. “I was in Glee last year and am in my second year as a member of the Cheerios. I’m also Principal Sylvester’s assistant, which means I spend a lot of time in the office, and anything that needs to be dealt with by the principal goes through my desk first.” Will smiled even though he still didn’t understand Sue’s proclivity to use s student as her secretary.

“Hi I’m Marley Rose and I’m also here because I like to perform. I was Sandy in last years production of Grease, and was in Glee last year. I want to be a singer on the radio and I write my own songs. Oh, and my mom works I’m the cafeteria.”

“I’m Ryder Lynn and I’m on the football team. I played Danny in Grease and was also a member of Glee last year. Oh and I’m a Junior. ”

“I’m Jake Puckerman, and I also love to perform. I play the guitar. I’m also a Junior.”

“I’m Unique Adams. I’m a Senior this year and I was also a member of the Glee Club both here and at my old school. For the record, despite what my anatomy may look like, I’m a girl. I realize that may be hard for some of you to accept, but I hope in time you will. I was cast as Rizzo in Grease last year, but my overprotective parents removed me from the show. Hoping for a better outcome this year.”

“I’m Betty Pillsbury I’m a senior and new to McKinley this year. I’m a member of the Cheerios and at my old school I was the Captain of the Cheerleading squad and a featured soloist in Vocal Adrenaline. I’m here because my aunt recommended it. ”

Several former glee club members shifted in their seats and shared nervous glances at the mention of their former rivals.

“My name is Marissa,” the new blonde said. “I’m a Sophmore this year and I wasn’t in Glee Club or the musical, but I decided I needed to make some new friends and thought it might be fun to try my hand at acting and singing . . ”

“Welcome Marissa,” Will said.

“My name is Dottie. I’m a member of the Cheerios and I was never in Glee Club but I was the personal assistant to one of the Senior members last year. It was the longest year of my life…. I’m here because I want to try something new.”

“My name is Jordan Stern,” the Cheerio with the neck brace told them. “I’m hoping to find a fun extracurricular activity to fill my time with after I am eventually forced to quit the Cheerios, because Coach Roz is a psychopath who is trying to kill us. ”

Several people chuckled.

They continued through the rest of the group. After the last student had spoken Mr. Schu thanked them for sharing and handed out books containing Death of a Salesman, the first play they would be reading, and told everyone to start brainstorming for what they wanted to do for that fall musical. Fortunately the rental and performance fees were paid for by a grant (something he’d managed to arrange when he was on the a Blue Ribbon Panel For Arts Education the previous year), but since that budget for the Drama Club was next to nothing, they would need to use the props and sets they had, or do a fundraiser cover the costs.

***

Ryder was uncomfortable during that entire Drama Club meeting. He hadn’t anticipated ‘her’ being here. It had taken weeks for him to get over being catfished by Unique, and he’d even almost forgiven him/her, But now the physical manifestation of that experience was right across the room from him, and it all began flooding back again: the feeling of being exposed, of not knowing who this person was who he had told all of those private stories to and shared those pictures with. Of serenading a girl he’d never even met.

He was about to get up and leave when Mr. Schue’s voice called out to him, “Ryder, can I see you for a minute?”

“Sure Mr. Schue, what’s up?”

“I couldn’t help notice that there was some uneasiness between you and Marissa. Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not really.”

“It might help if you did. You’re gonna be in here all year and probably gonna see her around in the halls too. ”

“I’m not sure I am going to stay in drama club this year.”

“Ryder, you need to face your problems head on, not avoid them. If I taught you all nothing else last year I hope it was that.”

Ryder sighed, “Okay Mr. Schue. Remember last year when I was bring catfished by someone calling herself Katie? Well that was her.”

“I thought it was Unique?”

“It was, but that’s the girl whose image he used. I didn’t find that out until after I had drug her by the hand into the choir room and serenaded her with Your Song by Elton John. I’ve never been so embarrassed in my whole life and seeing her here just brought that whole thing back again. I thought I was over it.”

“I see.” He said, placing an empathetic hand on Ryder’s shoulder, “I can understand why that would make you uncomfortable, but let me ask you something, is any of that Marissa’s fault?

“No, no I guess not. I suppose I should talk to her, eh?”

“That would probably be a good idea, yes. It’s going to be a long year if you don’t. And if you’re still having issues, I’m sure my wife would be happy to talk to you about it. ”

“Thanks Mr. Schue.”

***

That Wednesday evening Will and Emma had dimmer with Betty and her parents as sort of a welcome to town. During some down time, Will asked her about the reaction that she’d gotten from Kitty.

“I don’t know uncle Will, but she’s been watching me ever since I got here. I’m not sure what her problem is, but I was wondering if it was my chair. ”

“That’s very unlikely, she dated a guy in a wheelchair last year and they were good friends before that.”

“Let me guess, Artie Abrams?”

“Yeah how did you?…” But he stopped himself,

“Artie and I met last year at your almost wedding and went on a date afterword, but things didn’t work out . Somehow she must have found out…..what should I do Uncle Will?”

“Never underestimate that resourcefulness of Kitty Wilde.”

Author’s Notes: Okay folks you know the drill. Read and review. The more reviews I get the more inspired I will be and the faster I will get to the chapter where Kitty and Artie get to see each other again.

ANB – Chapter 02: Betty (Depreciated)

Chapter 2: Betty:

Author’s Notes: thank you everyone for that feedback on chapter 1 and my other story: In My Arms Again (Somewhere, Somehow). I promise I am not going to make Artie and Kitty apart for 2 years. I already know how their next encounter is going to go. I just need to set some things up on that McKinley High front first. Besides, the longer they are apart, the more bittersweet their eventual reunion will be.

###

Betty Pillsbury wasn’t happy as she rolled down the halls of McKinley high for the second time, the first day of her senior year.

The first time had been two days after the almost wedding of her dad’s sister Emma to one of the teachers who worked with her here at this God Forsaken school, where she was the guidance counselor. The wedding itself hadn’t happened because Emma, who suffered from OCD, had let her nerves get the best of her, and went all “runaway bride” on him. But since the wedding was all paid for by her eccentric ‘ginger supremacist’ grandparents, and lots of people had made the trip from out of town (and in some cases out of state), they all stayed and enjoyed the reception anyway, sans the happy couple, who eventually got back together and had a small private wedding.

At the wedding, she’d met a McKinley student named Artie whom her aunt had intended to set her up with. Their first encounter had been in the church sanctuary, but hadn’t gone very well.

“Hi Betty?”

“Yes? On, God.” This couldn’t be him could it? He’s in a freaking chair! She thought. But instead said, “What? Did I beat you to the last handicap spot? Sorry.”

“I’m Artie. Miss Pillsbury said I should look out for you?” Oh God!

“He’ll no.” This couldn’t be him.

“-uh-”

“No” it just couldn’t.

“-Uh-”

“No. Wheel away.” Her aunt wasn’t that clueless was she?. “Wheel… the hell …. Away. ”

He seemed confused, so she clued him in. “My aunt told me she was fixing me up with someone good-looking. So that was a lie.”

“Oh, I mean some people think I’m kind of nerdy hot so…” He said sheepishly.

“No No No….Andrew Garfield is nerdy hot. You … are Stephen Hawking’s younger brother.”

He finally seemed to be catching on. “Miss Pillsbury didn’t tell you I was in a wheelchair did she?”

“Um, obviously not, because I don’t date losers in chairs.”

“But You’re in a wheelchair. ” still clueless. When was he gonna get it?

“Yeah. I’m also blonde, Captain of the cheerleaders at my hIgh school, and I’ve got this going on.” She touched her massive breasts lifting them up.

She turned and wheels away leaving Artie dejected, hoping that would be the end of it, and began scouting for any other hot, single guys her age who were not in chairs. She’d discouraged his advances the same way she always kept people she didn’t like at arms length by being a total bitch to him, and it seemed to have worked.

But for some reason he was relentless and kept coming back for more verbal abuse. He seemed to feed on her bitchiness. Later at the reception he approached her again.

“Oh my God. Did you do not get it before.?”

“Yeah, I did. More than you know. You’re mean. You’re awful, because you’re angry because you’re in the chair. I understand.”

“Wow! Could you be more reductive and hamdi-centric? I’m fine with my chair. What I’m not fine with is suffering fools. If you think that makes me mean and awful -”

“I do.”

What? How dare he talk back to me?

“However, I find you oddly compelling, so …will you dance with me? I’m pretty legendary for my dance moves.” He moved his shoulders all around, arms and shoulders up and down. Tongue out.

She finally relented and agreed to dance with him. He was nothing if not persistent, and she would probably never be rid of him unless she gave him what he wanted. “Alright, fine, one dance.”

“That’s all I ask ” He raised his hands in surrender and lead her onto the dance floor.

As it turned out he was a good dancer, and once she let her guard down they really clicked, and spent the rest of the evening flirting together, where she learned that there was more to him than she’d thought. And on second thought, Stephen Hawking’s younger brother wasn’t so bad.

They had found out that they were not so different. They had both been paralyzed in a car crash as children. He at age 8, she at the much younger age of 2. Both had been confined to chairs ever since, but had not let that define who they were, even when others tried to. He could use his thigh muscles to a limited degree. But she was paralyzed from the mid chest down. They were both members of their schools respective show choirs. He sang Tenor while she sang Mezzo Soprano. While he had sometimes dreamed of walking again one day and dancing. She had no memories of walking so she had fully embraced the chair, and won a gold medal in the Special Olympics for wheelchair racing.

When the evening was over she’d invited him up to her room. As they approached the door, she handed him the key card with a smile. The two of them had hooked up that night, and it turned out that despite his disability he’d been the best lover she’d ever had, and with her social standing, she’d bedded several of the most popular and prominent guys at her school. Since he lacked the ability to use most of his legs, he’d managed to develop his other muscles and it really made a difference in bed. Since she was paralyzed from the chest down, she had an excuse to make him do most of the work.

After they’d done the deed and were basking in the afterglow, he asked her, “Was it good for you?”

She’d been uncomfortable admitting if at the time so she answered, “I don’t know, you?”

“No ides.”

Both laughed, and then they did it again.

The following morning they’d said their goodbyes without much fanfare, and she thought that was it, but the more she thought about it, the more she knew she had to tell him how much she’d enjoyed their time together, even if they ended up not seeing each other again.

That Monday, before heading home with the rest of her family, she’d made a visit to McKinley to tell him, and to apologize for being such a bitch at first. No one had ever put that much effort into getting to know her and it made her nervous.

She rolled down the halls, spotting him at his locker changing out his books, and rolled up to him.

“Surprised to see me?” She asked.

“No, I saw you two minutes ago,” he told her, without turning his head. “You took forever wheeling up here.”

Man, he could be bitchy too, when he wanted to be!

But she got serious. “Before I went home, I wanted to apologize for being so bitchy at the wedding. When I get nervous I get kind of mean.”

“Kind of mean? You were like Idi Amin mean.”

“I know I’m working on that. … ” she told him defensively. Then, “Anyway thanks for putting up with me…. And thanks for….”

They both grinned nervously.

“You’re like, the best I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot.”

That seemed to take him aback for a moment, but he recovered quickly. “Oh, me too, I mean my sexual prowess is legendary throughout the Great Lakes States.”

They both laughed.

He pulled out his phone, handed it to her. “Give me your digits woman.”

“Why?” She wanted to know. Wasn’t this just a hookup? You weren’t supposed to actually date guys you met at weddings. That just wasn’t how it was done.

“‘Cause this Saturday I’m taking you out.”

“–like on a date?” She asked in disbelief. But She put her numbers in his phone anyway.

“Yes,” he answered. “Definitely a date. We’ll grab some dinner, maybe see a movie.”

She returned his phone and responded, “Or… we could just skip dinner, and movie and –”

“Charter a private jet, fly to Paris…dance under the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs Élysées Yo when you’re rolling with Artie Abrams, anything can happen. ”

But, of course they both knew what she was getting at.

She smiled as he rolled away.

That Saturday, they went out on one date, which was decidedly more ordinary. They had dinner at a place called BreadstiX and watched the new X-Men movie, which she didn’t really enjoy because of his constant monologue describing how each scene was shot or probably shot, and in some cases, what a better way might have been.

She found that they had little in common, other than great sex (which they couldn’t resist indulging in again that night) and a bitchy banter. They lived in two different cities which would have made regular dating difficult. He wanted to try it, but she didn’t and dumped him the next day via text message.

That had been almost seven months ago, and things had radically changed. Her mom had been offered a better job with a significantly better salary and benefits. The only downside was that it would require a move back to Lima, Ohio, which neither of her parents had seen as a negative since they had family there.

So her parents had, without much consideration for how it would affect her, moved the family and transferred her to McKinley. She’d been forced to give up her position as head cheerleader at Carmel High, and featured soloist in Vocal Adrenaline, and move to a new school where she knew almost no one.

She’d been nervous that it might be awkward seeing Artie again, but when she’d asked, her aunt Emma told her that he’d graduated and was living in New York, so she would not have to deal with that drama.

It was her senior year and she needed to find some comparable extracurriculars if she wanted to have any kind of social life. Unfortunately the school glee club had been disbanded even after winning the number two in the National Show Choir Competition (whose bright idea was that anyway?); and the Cheerleading coach Roz Washington was reluctant to put her on the squad, because of her chair, But once Emma and her uncle Will informed her that would be discrimination, and showed video of what she’d done on the Carmel High squad, she’d reluctantly admitted her as a junior member. So she’d get to wear the red and white Cheerios uniform, but likely wouldn’t get to do much, even though it was her senior year. Her first meeting with Cheerios captain Bree, at their first practice that afternoon pretty much confirmed her hunch.

This was turning out to crappy year. Hopefully there was some other club she could join that would value her talents.

****

Kitty was walking down that hall when she’d seen an semi-familiar girl in a wheelchair. She knew she had seen her somewhere before, but couldn’t place where. She was wearing a Cheerios uniform and attended practice that afternoon.

When she was asked about it, Mrs. Pillsbury-Schuster had told her that this was her niece Betty, whom Kitty had barely missed meeting at her almost wedding, but hadn’t due to a week long case of that Asian Bird Flu.

After thinking about it she remembered that this was the girl with disturbingly massive boobs who visited McKinley after meeting Artie at their teachers almost wedding, then dumped him after one date. He’d been really hurting after that. According to puck who hadn’t gotten that Asian Bird Flu and made it to the wedding, Artie and the girl had hooked up that night. The thought of it made Kitty really jealous.

What the hell was she doing here?

She resolved to find out more about the girl so she could destroy her.

ANB – Chapter 01: A New Beginning (Depreciated)

Glee: A New Beginning

By Wilde Abrams

Author’s Notes: Thank you so much for the feedback on my previous story In My Arms Again! Sorry for the wait on my next story, but I wanted to wait until the last episode of the season to see if there were any more hints about what’s in store for Artie. I have been working on this story along with some other stuff since before that story was posted.

When I first posted this, We knew as much as we thought we were going to about his immediate future of Kitty, Artie, and the others. Season 6 will be the last and that it will be about the original glee club members (those that can be talked into returning ). It will include a time jump, and they will only “catch up with ” the newbies to see how being in glee club effected them, so we will have a pretty blank slate for fanfic storytelling. The latter half of season 5 is Kitty’s junior year, and the show skips another 6 months or so to latter in her senior year.

Most of this series was planned when almost nothing was known about about season 6 of Glee so everything at McKinley was AU but the New York stuff still followed cannon for the most part. The episode Tested is the first major divergence. In it Artie behaved in a very uncharacteristic way by hooking up with two different girls and perusing a third (apparently completely forgetting about Kitty) and contracting the clap. In this story, he did date several girls while in New York, and expected Kitty was doing that same, but did not hook up with them. The rest of the story should be more or less compatible with the remainder of season 5 and is therefore only slightly AU.

Update: More information has leaked about season 6. I won’t go into details for those of you who don’t want to be spoiled. But suffice it to say it’s going to be completely incompatible with what I have in mind with for how this story is going to go. So as of this writing, here is how I see this story developing.

When I get to that point, the story of what happens next is expected to be completely AU unless I can figure out a way to converge them but it doesn’t seem likely.

The story has been significantly revised since I originally posted it. I haven’t really changed much, but I added more things because I have a better grasp on the Kitty/Artie situation, and where I am taking the story. I highly recommend you read it from the beginning.

Chapter 1: New Beginnings

Artie was really relishing his life in New York. As it turned out, all of the anxiety he put himself through was for not. After a short period of adjustment, Artie really embraced his new life. A lot of that had to do with his close proximity to so many of his friends. Rachel, Kurt, Blaine, and Sam around all the time and Mercedes, Santana, and Brittany were around a lot too.

The only thing he was really missing was Kitty, and the two of them had agreed that because they were so far away from each other, that it was not fair to restrict their social lives, so they were free to date others if they wished, and they would avoid the problems that their friends had fallen into trying to maintain similar long distance relationships.

The only major setback he encountered was when he was robbed on the subway and someone stole his laptop. The laptop contained the only copy of his script so at the time it seemed catastrophic. Police were virtually no help, and for a few days he was reluctant to ride the subway.

But his friends supported and encouraged him, and Rachel even gave up her give up the town car her producer had given her so that she could ride the subway with him every day to give him the courage he needed. He didn’t need her help for very long, a few days later he and Rachel were on the subway and they saw the robber. After pepper spraying him and calling the police, they were able to recover not only his laptop, but possessions belonging to a lot of other people. It turned out the guy was a serial hoarder.

Since moving to New York, Artie had really flourished both academically and socially. His projects became very popular both with his teachers and with his fellow students particularly his female classmates. One of his professors had submitted his first full length film to three film festivals for consideration.

Life was good.

He also found that there were lots of women who wanted to date him. This was a sharp contrast to what he was used to. In high school he had only dated 5 women in his last 3 years of high school. Tina, Brittany, Sugar, Betty, and Kitty. In college he dated 3 women in 2 months Vanessa, Jessica, and Julie. For once in his life, he had not neede to be the pursuer.

He remembered his arrangement with Kitty, that they were free to date since maintaining long distanced relationships was next to impossible at the 589 mile distanced, but would be honest with each other about any significant developments. They would resume their current relationship when she graduated unless one or both of them had committed to a long term relationship with someone else by then. This had been more her idea than his. He assumed that it was because she did not want to be alone in high school, not that he could blame her, but could not bare the pain of a breakup, because while the circumstances sucked, they really did love each other.

After settling in to his new environment, Girls began to throw themselves at him because they thought he was cute and they liked his film. Initially he hadn’t planned to date much, but after a few weeks he figured that if she was going to date around, he may as well too. At first they had a Google Hangouts chat every day, or nearly so. But once school started, one or the other was busy a lot so their chats grew shorter and less and less often. After another month or so they were lucky if they talked once a week or so. The perils of leading different lives. He slowly accepted that this was how it was going to be, at least for now…

Out of the girls he saw, there was only one girl that he had to ask out himself. That was Julie, and the only one of the group that was prospective relationship material. They spent a lot of time together because she was a voice over artist on his film Bags In The Wind. Initially she stated that she would not date someone who she worked with, however she did change your mind and they went out on one date. But after she found out that he had dated the other two girls who she did not respect, she decided that she was no longer interested in him. He took this as a sign to slow down and focus on his projects.

He missed Kitty, but kept himself busy in an attempt to distract himself from just how much.

*#*#*

Kitty, on the other hand, had the opposite experience. Glee club was gone and with it most of her friends. She no longer had that daily excuse to spend time with her only real friends at McKinley: Marley, Unique Jake, and Ryder; The others having graduated or move on to other things.

Kitty felt lost. She was still a member of the Cheerios, but no longer high in the hierarchy with the senior members. He had given that up the previous year by choosing to date Artie and be friends with glee club members.

Since glee club had been canceled in defeat for their loss at nationals, they were now considered failures by most other students. This was something that had been encouraged by Principal Sylvester. She only wanted winners at her school, and second place (even if it was in the whole nation) was just that first loser, was her motto. The sad part was, kitty had once agreed with it.

Kitty no longer enjoyed Cheerios as much as she had, and briefly considered quitting, but she knew that she needed the status that it afforded her to survive in high school even if she was no longer on top. She knew that Bree would like nothing better than to force her off the squad, but she was one of the best members, and even Bree and Coach Roz knew that they needed her if they were going to retain their title as National Champions.

She was forced to see her friends in private and act as if they weren’t friends in public to avoid being hazed by the other Cheerio members. Coach Roz was a bitch and refused to do much of anything about it, choosing not to see what was happening.

She had intended to keep the promise that she made to be friends with the former glee club members, and she made an effort to do so. But her teammates on the Cheerios made it completely impossible for her to do so with Unique. Bree and her cohorts on the Cheerios made it their personal mission to torment Wade/Unique on a daily basis, and made it clear that Kitty and the other Cheerios were expected to go along with it. Kitty didn’t actually hurl insults herself, but she did laugh rather uneasily when socially necessary, and then avert her eyes in shame. She felt terrible but didn’t know what else to do.

Instead of feeling accepted, she realized that she had never felt so alone in her life; except the time immediately after she had told her friend Julie her brother had done and she had her friends turn against her. Last year was the best year of her life, but judging by the first couple weeks, this was shaping up to be the worst.

*#*#*

The third week back at McKinley, Kitty was summoned to the office of Principal Sylvester. Kitty hadn’t been taking care of Sue Sylvester’s daughter since about the middle of last year so she wondered what it was about.

True to her word Sue had literally had the office stripped bare to the studs and redone so it looked almost nothing like its previous self. Gone we’re the glass windowed wall and comfortable couches and end tables. In their place were a solid wall and much more functional chairs. The room was decked out in memorabilia from Sue’s career as a cheerleading coach reminiscent of her old office in the athletic wing, with a smattering of other memorabilia from her life, including a framed picture of what Sue had once told her was her late sister Jean.

“I’ll make this quick.” Sue told her. “As you know I don’t like to beat around the bush with things. You know I’ve always liked you. You remind me of elements of both a young Sue Sylvester and Quinn Fabray, but not quite as evil an underhanded.

“Now that Glee Club is over you need something besides cheerleading and drama to keep you busy. With Becky Jackson’s graduation I have an opening for a secretary. But unless you’re willing to legally change your name to Becky I can’t call you my Becretary,” Sue chuckled, and continued, “so we’ll have to come up with some other name for you. Oh and my daughter misses you. The illegal alien I hired to be her nanny just doesn’t have the knack for feeding and changing her that you do. What do you say? I’d hate to have to being back Figgins secretary Donna. The woman smells like feet.”

Kitty just sat there and looked back at her with a shocked look for several minutes. “Let me get this straight. You canceled the Glee Club and in doing so took away one of the few things that gave me any joy at this God forsaken school. And now you want me to do you a favor?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve got to be freaking kidding me! Why on Gods green earth would I do that?”

“Because if I make you my new right hand bitch again, you will be the most powerful student in the school, every student will have of answer to you, you will have something over Bree… You didn’t think it had escaped my notice that the two of you don’t exactly get along since I promoters her to Captain of the Cheerios… A post formerly held by you?”

“Why are you doing this?”

“I told you, I like you-”

“-If that’s true then bring back the Glee Club, the only thing, besides Artie at this school that’s ever brought me any real joy.” She said rising to her feet.

“That’s never going to happen. Glee Club is gone and is never coming back. I finally defeated Will Schuester and I’m not backing down.”

Kitty gave her ‘a what are you talking about’ look, followed by a deep sigh.

“I don’t understand why you’re doing this to Bree and the Cheerios. I thought you like the Cheerios. You promoted Bree to the head of the Cheerios yourself. Why help me take her down now?”

“Now that I’ve defeated Will Schuester and destroyed the Glee Club, I need to use my energies towards motivating another club, and I’ve chosen the Cheerios because they barely made it to nationals last year, and we’re very close to being defeated. I always used being unpredictable as a motivator and it works for me. And beside Coach Roz Washington bothers me even worse than Will Schuester.”

“I don’t understand what does your feud with Mr. Schue have to do with anything?”

But Sue had finally lost patience with her.

“Take it or leave it Kitty. But I have to know by the end of the week. If you don’t want it I have to set up some interviews. ”

Kitty stood there for a few moments thinking it over in her head. Bree had become completely insufferable since being promoted to captain of the Cheerios and seriously needed to be knocked down a few pegs. Coach Roz wasn’t going to do anything, and had become increasingly insufferable herself since their nationals win the previous spring.

“I don’t need till the end of the week to decide. As long as we are agreed that in the broader pecking order I have authority over Bree, then we have a deal. That bitch has messed with my life and the people I care about for the last time! ”

Sue extended her hand and shook Kitty’s hand. “Welcome back Kitty. I know you’ll do a hall of a job …. And for your first order of business …. Robin needs her diaper changed.”

And that is how Kitty got her high pony back.

*#*#*

On her way to out of Sue’s office, Kitty walked past Dottie Kazatori.

“Dottie I’m the new head bitch at McKinley. I’m in the market for a personal assistant. It will be your chance to get revenge on Bree for tricking you into slushing Tina and almost tasking the fall for it. Interested?”

“Absolutely.”

“Good,” Kitty said, tasking g her under her arm. “Here’s What we’re gonna do. …”
